Who owns Aloha POS?

I've been getting questions about how Aloha POS is being paid for.

Let me clear up a few things.

Aloha POS has been completely open source since the beginning. The core developers maintain it and continue to work on it as volunteer labor. It has no monetary value attached to it whatsoever. There are many ways people can contribute to open source software without pay. As an example, the developers here at Aloha POS receive no money from anyone. They don't need it, and frankly they don't want it.

If we did accept a free gift of money from someone, it would only be so we could give back to that person in other ways. We can't give it to them directly, because we don't have that type of relationship with our donors.

The core developers are volunteers. They do this for the love of the craft, to see what they can accomplish in their spare time. They like working on Aloha POS, and like working on open source projects more than anything else.

I want to emphasize that we're all volunteers. I'm personally committed to donating time and energy to open source for the rest of my life. We can never expect to have any significant financial return for our work. That's why we spend our time and energy in the first place. We just don't see the point in working for monetary compensation if we won't be able to donate that compensation to the projects we help to create.

So who pays for Aloha POS? It's a good question. No one pays for Aloha POS. Everyone of us here is doing it as a personal mission in our spare time.

There are a few projects that I find I want to work on, so I might ask you to help to pay for them. This can be in the form of an e-mail campaign, a personal donation, or even buying a couple of t-shirts. The most important thing is that you want to help to pay for Aloha POS, so I can focus on the project and not have to worry about what to do with a second job.

How can you help to pay for Aloha POS? The easiest thing to do is to go to Aloha POS's donation page and help to sponsor an ongoing feature development.
