Why won't BT Sport work with VPN?

My understanding is that VPNs can affect broadband service - as it would be the case if BT Sport works through you internet.

The same goes with BT's online content? Why not just use a VM? So, why does a VPN work but online content won't? Is it because BT works for you and not me, so has to account for different ISPs? When watching BTSports on Roku you have two options. You can download the BTSport client application and you will have all of the TV channels you want along with the BTSports channel.
