Why is NordVPN blocking Internet?

We asked the best VPN service providers of 2020

Last year, one of the biggest VPN services provider, was blocked completely from China and that was also one of the worst moments for us.

A VPN can be a lifesaver when trying to remain anonymous while trying to access censored news sites or torrent trackers on the Internet. But blocking, for many, should be unacceptable and we at NordVPN are no exception.

The issue started on Friday June 29 when NordVPN informed its thousands of clients that the China-based VPN would be blocked in China. We have had some trouble accessing different censored sites inside mainland China while we have also received complaints from other customers who have been blocked from the service.

I got an email on Friday June 29. All clients will be affected. In it said they will not accept any more orders from China. Then on Wednesday the block went live. I asked for clarification and to confirm if it's a ban or if this is just an IP blackhole, however they told me it was a block by DNS. Now after having looked a little deeper, I decided that it was likely a block by ISP. If you remember, China announced that most websites like Telegram or Facebook are inaccessible or blocked by ISPs, this being something that has become quite normal with censoring practices within China.

So how does NordVPN react to this issue and what makes it such an important VPN service for journalists and activists? Firstly, let's remind you that the service is still accessible across Hong Kong (Hong Kong/China border), Singapore and Japan. That means that you could visit them even if the website was inaccessible. Unfortunately for mainland Chinese users, this wasn't the case.

A lot of times the answer depends on which VPN company you choose but most of them do offer customer support and I always recommend that you take into account the reputation and the quality of the products and services offered when it comes to VPNs, they can be great or really cheap so the level of technical information they have available on their support pages should help you choose the right one. It appears that they have not provided customers with any information about how this will impact their service and this seems like a real oversight on their side.

Is there a phone number for NordVPN?

I'm currently on Sprint and haven't really checked my bill.

There is, you can dial the US international access number and then dial the UK/US access codes to obtain an access code. It may be difficult to find the international access code if you don't already have it, but you should be able to find it with a phone book, google, or another service you use (just Google: "international access code for " and your country of residence). If you don't have the international access code, your only other option is to wait for the price to go down, or to go through the refund process, and try again when you get home.

That is correct and is a normal international call, as long as you're not on a capped plan. There's no need to talk to someone, just dial the code and the rest of the info will be printed on your screen.

I had a Sprint employee call me up yesterday while I was abroad to change my number over. The cost for the new number will be reflected on your next bill and there will be no additional charges to use the VPN. I assume you're abroad at the moment, though.

Doesn't work on my network here. My wife's Samsung S4 is on the Sprint network, and I don't know how to do international calls without talking to an operator.

Why isn t my NordVPN working?

The VPN works as expected for me with a few caveats.

I tested it on Windows 10 and I didn t get the full 5.

It s better than our old provider, so that s a bonus. So why does it still suck? The first thing to note is that NordVPN is a subscription-based service. I ve never been one for paying monthly subscriptions. I much prefer to have a package of months for when I need it rather than having to pay every month.

I think it s the only way to keep prices down and give you a good deal. Still, that s a bit of a downer for me, but I m willing to make an exception for NordVPN. But it s more than that. I also have to take issue with their DNS leak detection. In short, they don test your DNS at all. If you use a DNS provider that s not part of their network, or if you use a DNS provider that has a different configuration, then your connection could leak. I like the idea of their DNS leak detection, but they don t do a good job of it. I haven t been able to find any other VPN providers that do DNS leak detection properly. I also don t want to point out the fact that their server setup sucks. You can tell that they don t care about their server setup by their server count. There are over 30 servers in Canada alone, and there are many more servers around the world. The problem is that they only run on AWS. I m not going to talk about AWS, but I will say that they only run on a few datacenters and they don t use many of them. That s bad for me, because the main reason I use NordVPN is because they use multiple datacenters and because their servers are closer to my location. But NordVPN doesn t care about datacenter location, and they don t care about server proximity. If they did, they would have moved to a datacenter in the United States a long time ago. That s not my fault, though. I have no control over where they choose to host their servers.
