Can I use NordVPN with Netgear router?
I have the Linksys/Netgear DGA-8820 (with firmware 5.70.4.9) and when I use the NordVPN server list for NordVPN, which offers OpenVPN and PPTP protocols. All the servers that offer OPENVPN run the PPTP protocol (this is how I learned it from a post here) so I figured I would just use the NordVPN servers but my ISP blocked the PPTP protocol on ports 1723 or 1754.
Does anybody know if the NordVPN servers run OpenVPN so I can use the router normally to connect to the NordVPN server list in NordVPN? I haven't gotten anywhere doing some research so far. Please note that the NordVPN servers are intended to be run through OpenVPN for security reasons. The PPTP protocol is what is allowed through most ISPs. That's why we recommend choosing only OpenVPN servers (through our app or website). With our OpenVPN servers, you don't need to worry about having your traffic routed through the VPN or getting blacklisted with your ISP. Just download OpenVPN to your computer or laptop and you're good to go!
I have tried with an ipad and had issues. It says I must configure port for remote management, I've tried all the port numbers as given by NordVPN. I tried different browsers and got the same messages. I tried an alternative app called VPNMentor to no avail. I even removed the Netgear router and used an Apple Airport as the router and that didn't work either.
I guess it comes down to me being lazy and wanting to use PPTP since I am on a home connection now. Also, I didn't think that it was possible to just remove the default ports using the default settings on the Linksys router.
Thanks for the response. Let me try that with this Netgear router (but it's an older model, v6) before I bother trying anything else. I guess it is still worth a shot, though. I have a lot of work to do now, so I will go for it. Maybe somebody else will catch something I've missed or have other ideas.

How does NordVPN work with WIFI?
When you use WIFI, your private information can be accessed by a third party.
If you have an open WIFI router or public hotspot, then your data can be snooped by any hacker or malicious third party on the same network. We understand that you do not want this information to be visible to anyone else. So how can we ensure your privacy? We have some exclusive features for you, which will help you enjoy your privacy.
Use Open WIFI with NordVPN. Some WIFI routers do not support the latest security protocols. Our proprietary Open WIFI feature will automatically detect open WIFI networks and connect to them without changing anything on your device. You can then surf freely without any concern about privacy.
The new Open WIFI feature is fully compatible with our app for iPhone, iPad and Android. If you have an Open WIFI network available, the app will automatically connect and use it for free. You can surf the web anonymously without having to enter a login or password.
Keep Your Internet Traffic Secret. Do you know that your internet traffic is visible to anyone else? If so, they can easily see your personal details such as payment card details, contact details, and even the contents of your emails. When using an Open WIFI, we automatically protect your internet traffic with 256-bit AES encryption. When you use NordVPN on your device, we can even encrypt your entire internet traffic. Even if someone else knows your IP address, they will be unable to see your browsing history, emails, or anything else.
Stream Your Online Movies and TV Shows Securely. If you are streaming movies or TV shows, using Open WIFI is especially essential. A WIFI router without any encryption might be prone to data interception by hackers. They may be able to gain access to your browsing history, payment details, emails, and other sensitive information.
With NordVPN, you can enjoy streaming your favorite movies or TV shows on your PC, laptop, or smartphone without worrying about your privacy. It can automatically block websites known for spying on your internet activity. Even when you are connected to an Open WIFI, the connection is safe and secure.
Make Your Own Private Wi-Fi Hotspots. Are you tired of having to pay for third-party internet access?
Does NordVPN support routers?
How does it affect data transfer?
We have been evaluating NordVPN recently and we'd like to ask you a couple of questions regarding its support of routers and the transfer speed. First off, is there any data transfer at all through routers? NordVPN will always use whatever route it has available in your network. This usually means that data is going through an Internet connection on a router or a wireless network. The main difference from one country to another is in the configuration of the router (gateways, DNS, NAT), but this doesn't change the speed of the connection. When you connect to a VPN, it simply uses one of the open connections available to you.
However, you can make sure that NordVPN only uses the best route by using OpenVPN as the protocol in the configuration. To do this, add the following line to your client software (the client itself can be OpenVPN or PPTP): dev tun. And then set your default route to the interface of the VPN server. For example, if the VPN server is connected to the 10.0/8 subnet, you can do:
Route add 10.0/8 dev tun0 Can I choose a specific route to my VPN? This feature was not added for VPNs but it would be cool to have this feature. As far as we know, currently there is no way to do this. Can I use the VPN outside of my home network? We do not support connecting to your VPN server from anywhere else. Are there any data transfer costs associated with the use of a VPN? The cost of the VPN service is included in our monthly subscription. The data transfer fee is 100% free of charge.
What about free VPN services? Free VPNs are unreliable, so it's best not to use them. Is there any data transfer through free VPNs? It's possible to connect to a VPN service without paying a fee, but it will likely slow down your internet connection or even prevent you from browsing. If you use a free VPN, it will be limited to your own country. It's also very easy to use the free VPN service and then use it to unblock websites and bypass censorship.
