What skills do QA testers need?
In the past few years, more and more companies are adopting agile development methodologies.
This means that testers can and should be working in the same team as developers. However, there are still a lot of QA testers who are left out of this development revolution. What skills do they need to work in this new environment?
While agile development can mean lots of different things, it can be broken down into two parts: Working in an agile team. Being an agile tester. The first part is just about working in a team and understanding that the team is changing all the time. You might be able to make a couple of days a week a one-man team but there will always be more work that needs to be done. This means that you can't expect a permanent QA position. If you're not willing to change and adapt to the new team structure, you might not be able to contribute to the company anymore.
The second part of agile development means that you have to be an agile tester. Being a good tester means having certain skills that you can use in your work. Let's look at them one by one.
You can't be an agile tester without being able to work in an agile team. An agile team is one that changes all the time. Sometimes they can change quite a bit, sometimes only slightly. In either case, the goal is to adapt the team to the changing situation. This means that you need to be able to analyze how a team is developing. Are they making progress or are they getting stuck? How can you support them in this?
It's also important to understand that your fellow team members are not perfect. If they are not aware of your knowledge, skills and experience, they might expect you to solve their problems for them. This is where you need to be assertive. It's also important to be able to communicate effectively with them.
Being an agile tester means that you don't just work on your own. You need to be able to collaborate with your team and provide them with valuable information. You need to be able to make sure that your team is able to deliver quality software to their users.
Finally, you need to be able to work with developers.
What are the most important skills for a QA Tester?
This is a question that comes up over and over again for tester resources at all levels, from beginner level to those at advanced QA testing techniques.
In this article, I'll be sharing my advice to anyone who wants to become a better QA tester. And as we all know, there is no better without the quality in the word better. That's why I've compiled this list of my top skills and best practices. Let's have a look together.
Learn to Write TAP Testing. The best way to become a skilled QA tester is to build skills like test automation, test planning, defect prioritization, test strategy and so on. However, it's not sufficient just to know how to use these. You must also be able to write your own test scripts and to execute them with a very precise and organized format. This was where I started out from.
While I am good at learning about new tests, I don't possess the ability to write them. I always want to have a guide to tell me what to do and where to start. I would say, the following steps are necessary to get better at writing TAP scripts:
Reading books. Reading the manual - As a QA tester, you need to be as proficient as you can in using the testing tools that you're using. For example, you might not know how to navigate through the GUI of your testing tool or find out the basic menu commands and other tips. Also, manuals are very useful to understand the testing framework and techniques that you are dealing with.
As a QA tester, you need to be as proficient as you can in using the testing tools that you're using. Reading articles - I usually read articles and tutorials on various topics. There are too many to count, but here are some examples: Google Chrome UI Testing (JavaScript) for web applications
How do I become a QA Tester with no experience?
I have no professional experience.
I am a college graduate that has experience in the Information Technology field. This is my last resort before quitting my job and living off of disability. I already know how to take tests, but I'm afraid if I try to make it up as I go along, I will fail. I do have a friend who I can follow in his footsteps, but I'm not sure how feasible it will be for me. There is not much written on how I should start. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.
The process is called "apprenticeship". You follow someone (the experienced one) or take a course. It's like learning to be a plumber but you don't need any practical training because we provide you with the best books in the world that explain plumbing. It's like reading a text book but better because you get live practice. The only way you become a tester, is to read the books, attend the classes, practice and practice.
Vincent TorkiaSep 11 '13 at 16:47. I don't think anyone can give you advice, except to tell you not to quit your current job until you try to make a living at testing. At this stage, just learning how to learn is enough. If you're good at working out how to get your results by following the instructions that come with your products, that's fine. Keep trying.
You have a degree, so I assume you already have some general education that makes you an ideal candidate for learning anything you could want to learn. But don't limit yourself. Most of your time could be spent learning, not actually testing stuff. Get a couple of books on programming, a book on operating systems, learn the various scripting languages available to you. Learn how to program, it will add a whole new dimension to what you can do.
The real test is how well you work with the people you work with. Find someone who's able to advise you, someone willing to work closely with you on this, someone you like and trust. And that's the best way to find out if you can make a living out of testing.
Do you mean it you don't have any knowledge of computer programs or Operating Systems or Programming languages and that you are a college graduate?
