Can you use VPN with qBittorrent?

Can you use VPN with qBittorrent?

The short answer is yes, qBittorrent uses the OpenVPN client to connect to your VPN.

However, you cannot access ports below 1024 which are blocked by a common class of VPN providers which route everything through their centralized server. The main benefit of using a VPN with qBittorrent would be the ability to unblock specific websites such as Netflix. This may not seem very important but I can't recall how many times I've wished Netflix wasn't blocked on public wifi networks. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem for unblocking any website. That will have to wait for a different project.

OpenVPN works great but it's not very user friendly. You need to know the right commands. I'm not qualified to discuss how to setup OpenVPN (I'm only a n00b). If you are, please leave a comment.

However, in the process of trying to get an OpenVPN client to work we ended up finding one that works pretty well: mRouted, a command line rpfilter client. MRouted requires very little setup and no special permissions are required.

The setup steps are: Install the mRouted software on both your client and server. On your client, download the OpenVPN .DEB package.

Package. Install the deb package with your preferred method. For example, on Ubuntu open up a terminal, type sudo dpkg -i PACKAGE.

Run mRouted by executing the following on your client: mrouted /dev/null, replace /dev/null with the mRouted server. After your VPN disconnects make sure your web browser and other network connected applications work fine.

, replace with the mRouted server. On your client open a terminal and type mrouted server-ip. After that finishes successfully open up your web browser and test if it's working over the VPN. If it's not, repeat these steps.

After mRouted is set up correctly you can use it just like OpenVPN by downloading the .DEB package again and installing it with the same methods explained above.
