How do I get widevine L1 on Netflix?
The easiest way to get widevine L1 on Netflix is to sign up for the free trial.
Netflix already includes the Widevine L1 plugin and will automatically convert your video files if you have a widevine license.
If you don't have the free trial, please open your account and then go to your Profile tab. Scroll down until you see Settings and then select 'Activate Your Account'. You'll need to enter a valid email address and choose whether you want to add a credit card to your account. Once the free trial is active, you should get an email with your activation key. Open your account again and then go back to the Profile tab. Scroll down to the bottom and click on 'Activation Key' or the 'Activate' button.
Do I need an extra license? An important disclaimer is that the DRM technology we rely on is not perfect. The industry standard for DRM in digital distribution has been cracked before and may be cracked again. You should be aware that any future crack of the widevine encryption may not enable access to your content. If this is the case, you will not be able to view your content without purchasing additional licences.
Netflix uses a variety of DRM technologies to protect their streaming media. Widevine is one of these, but it isn't the only option. Because we use these technologies and do not store personally identifiable information, we will not be liable if someone else's computer has been used to commit a security breach that would cause us to be liable to you. As a result, you are responsible for protecting your own computer from security breaches.
What's included in a widevine license? You're licensed to watch all the Netflix content you own that is protected by Widevine L1 on up to three devices at a time (a PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet), which allows you to watch on as many devices as you like. It's all one subscription per one account. If you want to watch on more than three devices, you'll need to buy additional licences.
Licenses sold on the store are based on a subscription of either one or three years. This means that your licenses will automatically renew each year unless you opt out. As long as you remain a paying customer, you can continue to receive content indefinitely.
Is Netflix L1 or L3?
As usual, some things have surprised me at Netflix.
They launched their Long-Term Contract (LTC) and Premium Video Subscription (L3) in August, 2024, and have only raised prices once, a couple months ago. I assumed that the company was already making boatloads of money on LTCs and L3s, and was using a mix of those, along with streaming (which remains free to all), to help subsidize the costs of content, and/or other services. But, as we've seen, content costs are still really high, and I assumed that the LTCs and L3s are probably not profitable (or, at least, profitable only with major expense cuts to the streaming service). As it turns out, even with the price increase, a lot of people are likely still sticking with LTCs. But I don't think anyone was expecting that a ton of people would just use the streaming services for free! How does it compare to other online services? I went ahead and performed some very crude comparisons. First, below is a screenshot of data from Netfllix's US site. There is probably only one item of data that is very misleading: Netflix Watch Free. You can see that this is misleading in more ways than just the fact that they actually have two different plans, one of which is called Watch Free. This is because someone (possibly Netflix), added a whole bunch of bogus data: people who got Watch Free as part of a new subscription and then cancelled the membership within three days. It turns out these are really only members of L3. (But, as you will read below, there is a lot of other data that isn't quite as accurate as they would like you to believe.) For the rest of the data, I made some assumptions that we will talk about later, but for now, I'm going to assume that it is valid. And I'll also assume you haven't subscribed to any of the plans they offer. The first thing to note is that L1 streams are free, no matter what plan you choose, and that L3 streams are not.99 for Standard Definition.
