I have McAfee antivirus installed on a PC running Windows 8.

1 Pro. My router and/or firewall (if enabled) are behind a locked down firewall. The McAfee antivirus is not configured to allow outside connections via my router or fire wall. I can connect to McAfee website from an internet cafe on the same continent as my location. If I try to connect to a remote website from an ISP in a different continent, I get a "Not all features are supported in your security software".

Do I need to be able to access McAfee website in order to use its real-time VPN feature? I don't want McAfee to have any network traffic going through it for obvious reasons. I do however need to be able to access McAfee's website because I have to update it often. Is there a way around this?

I have no intention of accessing the internet from the inside. If someone has my pc connected to the internet I would assume they were able to access it through the router's firewall and/or firewall. My intentions are to keep the router's firewall locked down so no one can access it except by opening ports and allowing it to act like a router.

It appears that McAfee is trying to prevent me from accessing their website. It's frustrating! I'm not sure if I should turn off McAfee, turn off my router, turn off my firewall, or what. Or is there some other setting I'm missing that will enable my router's fire wall?

I have my router firewall set to allow connections only from a few websites.

When I turn on my Windows firewall I can log onto McAfee site from anywhere but if I turn my router firewall off, then I am unable to connect to McAfee from anywhere. If my router firewall is turned off, how do I know if McAfee's VPN is on? I have a new router but before I connect to it to set it up, I should be able to check to see if the VPN service is working. Is there a way to do that from inside the router's web browser?

Did McAfee remove their VPN?

I'm having a strange issue with a McAfee subscription right now.

I use ProtonVPN on my phone, laptop and router. McAfee blocks access to ProtonVPN by default and I can't find any settings to change this behaviour. The only option is to unblock the McAfee app that's installed. Does anyone have any ideas how to get McAfee to stop doing this?
The latest version of McAfee doesn't allow VPN unless you give McAfee root permission via ADB on their new McAfee VPN Manager application. This means that if you root your phone (and do it correctly) then the next time you run McAfee, it will tell you that your connection needs to be unblocked, but it will allow it to proceed.

You can also delete the new McAfee apps that are provided by McAfee (not the ProtonVPN apps), and install the old stock version of McAfee, which doesn't require root permissions. Then root your phone once again (if necessary), run the newest McAfee, and then McAfee will not ask for unblocking.

If you are not a fan of rooting your phone, then you can always use the stock version of ProtonVPN, because it is not built on any McAfee products, and thus, will continue working normally once you uninstall the stock McAfee app. If you aren't willing to root your phone, then it would probably be a good idea to delete the McAfee app entirely. If you don't know how, there are plenty of guides around on the Internet about how to root your phone and how to delete apps. There should be an option to unroot your phone, as well, if you are root-free. Also, there are lots of apps out there that will let you uninstall the McAfee app. I recommend using SuperSu.

Microsoft has released an updated version of its Windows 10 operating system that includes some new features that include the ability to turn on a McAfee VPN.

If you have a Microsoft account and a McAfee subscription, you can enable the VPN feature. You'll need to sign in with your Microsoft account before you can access the VPN service.
