Do I need a streaming device for Roku?

No.

Streaming device is only useful for apps like Netflix or Spotify, you don't need a streaming device for YouTube (assuming that you have a good Wi-Fi connection and sufficient bandwidth). I use an Apple TV 3, and the one with the built in USB connection. The other day I upgraded to a Roku and was impressed at how much better it worked with Netflix than the Apple TV. Both work great together, but if you want to add another media player, it is pretty much a must to have a USB port. When the new Amazon Fire TV comes out, it will be even more desirable. You can stream Netflix from a USB stick and still watch anything else. So, I would say the answer to your question is no, but you should have a USB device.

We have had the Firestick, and after using it for a few months now, I would say the Roku is by far the best option of the two if you are looking to build an HD television.

I like to have my Roku 4k setup so that it takes the place of a Smart TV.you know the new ones that can search for info as well as act as a game console, remote control and a networked video player. I don't like playing games on the tv because of the extra weight and bulk. My r4k gets picked up from time to time.

I have both and I love both of them. But if I can get 1 thing out of these 2 products I can say it's the HD Roku. I am not sure if it's really worth it getting just one of them.
