Configure a rule. The rule type to use depends on the type of VPN client you plan to connect. Connecting a Tunnel Client. To create a rule to connect to a tunnel client, follow these steps. Open Network and Sharing Center. In the left pane, select View installed programs. In the Installed programs list, locate a VPN client. For example, if you plan to connect to a PPTP client, locate the PPTP client.

Select the VPN client, then click Connect. In the VPN client settings, click Allow access to the network. You can click Yes. If you trust the network, you can select No.

If you do not trust the network, you will need to specify whether the client will use strong or weak encryption. If you want to limit the network access that the client has, do the following: Select a setting from the drop-down list. Select one of the options: Allow a specific program or file to access this computer. Allow all programs to access this computer. Allow no programs to access this computer. Select a connection option from the drop-down list.
