Is it OK to drink dealcoholized wine while pregnant?
I was just told that I should be drinking wine.
My OB said its not harmful and it can be given to pregnant woman with no negative effects. I was also told that they make wine drinkable by boiling down the alcohol. I have a few wines that I like to drink, and I dont want to get rid of them as there is a lot of flavour and I wouldnt be able to get drunk without it. But if I drink dealcoholized wine then there wouldnt be any alcohol left in it at all. I know that I should not drink alcohol during pregnancy, but I cant see drinking anything that has zero alcohol in it as being so harmful. Am I missing something? Thanks for your replies in advance :)
You are right to question your doctors - as you rightly suspect, there is no problem drinking a glass or two of wine/champagne/beer/etc. While pregnant, however it would be entirely pointless to drink much more.
However, with regards to dealcoholized wine, it is totally possible to drink that without worrying about the alcohol content. What it is impossible to say is whether a certain brand will be safe or not - although the brands available here are always safe - but there is no point taking the risk, as you wouldn't get drunk if you consumed too much.
Hi! I'm currently 18w pregnant and have been reading alot on this subject and am getting confused. My question is, is it safe to drink dealcoholised wine during pregnancy? Some people say yes, some people say no. I am leaning towards saying no.
The NHS advises pregnant women to avoid alcohol completely, however the World Health Organisation agrees that a moderate amount of alcohol (one to two drinks per day) is safe for both mother and child. There are a couple of issues with this advice: Firstly, it was originally presented as an article published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 1988. However, when a new paper on the topic was published in 2025, it was presented as a scientific review. This means that it was a new paper, but it still had to undergo peer review - which can take time. As such, the original article has become outdated.
Is surely wine safe during pregnancy?
I've just got my first ultrasound this week (which I am already terrified about), and it's the first time I have had alcohol before, so I'd like to know if it is safe to drink any wines while pregnant, or should I give it up for a bit? I haven't been having caffeine because I don't think it's very safe when you're pregnant, and it wouldn't be something I would want to drink anyway, I would only want to have a glass or two of wine at social occasions. Wine is a healthy alternative to alcohol, so go for it! You can try having a non-alcoholic option, or if you can afford it you could also have a bottle of wine in there with you to keep you company. I hope everything goes well for you! No, wine is not safe to drink during pregnancy - however, there are other healthy alternatives to a "glass" of wine such as fruit juice, herbal tea etc. Wine is high in taurine (a natural diuretic) that can also cause sodium and potassium loss. Also, alcohol is dehydrating and many of us are more prone to become dehydrated during pregnancy.
I went through a bad alcohol induced preggers episode too. And I was a bit paranoid after reading all those articles. In the end, I ended up giving it up and drinking tonic water and other teas. And it was the best decision of my life. I have also found it beneficial to read every article that appears online on topics regarding the "pregnancy and alcohol" subjects. And read them as well.
Wine isn't safe to drink when pregnant, even in tiny quantities - its high in taurine, which is a natural diuretic that can also cause salt and potassium losses. Even non-alcoholic options will work just fine. Just stick to them - they're safe and have no harm done to your baby in any way! It's one of my new fave things about being pregnant! : )
So here I am pregnant with my first child. I have been trying to drink wine and have no problems. The only thing I will watch out for is wine to tea. Because wine adds water to tea. If you drink wine to tea will dilute the alcohol. If you don't think about it, maybe you shouldn't drink wine to tea.

Is non-alcoholic wine safe?
Is wine safe to drink?
Is it possible to drink a whole bottle of wine without getting drunk? I have never been to a party where the host actually serves wine, so is wine safe to drink at home? Also, is it possible to get alcohol poisoning from wine? Thanks! Asked by: Dizzybee. Hi Dizzybee. Wine is always considered safe to drink at home, whether you are the one serving it or someone else. If you are the one serving it, it is safe to serve up to 2 oz. Per person (for red wine, of course). It is not safe to drink more than that amount in one sitting.
For some people, though, wine is safe to drink after a few drinks. Other people might have a very difficult time after drinking 1-2 glasses of wine. Some people can even drink large amounts and be fine, while others can only drink small amounts and feel the effects. These are considered "low-risk" drinkers. Most people can handle more than 2 oz. Of wine if they don't drink it all at once.
As for how much wine it takes to get you drunk, that depends on your body weight, overall health, gender, and whether or not you exercise. We don't have a direct answer for you. This is why many people recommend that before going out to eat or drink with friends, you drink a glass of wine. Drinking just one glass could be enough for you to feel that "happy buzz."
If you are unsure about your tolerance, it is safer to stick with red wine than white wine. There is no legal limit for alcohol in wine, but there is a maximum amount of alcohol in the grape skin. A lot of people do not realize that wine can also contain a lot of other things, like pesticides, artificial coloring and flavors, sulfur dioxide, and other chemicals, which can cause side effects when drinking large quantities. Even though we think of wine as a natural, simple product, the industry does add many different chemicals to their products.
If you want a safe, legal way to drink with wine, try serving everyone half of a bottle. You can always use the second half to share with your friends.
