While some copyright violations occur worldwide (ie, without any physical borders) and often involve large, international publishers, IP-infringement has traditionally been localized. And when it is localized, the results are predictable: the content is created in a very particular place where the law is quite lax on intellectual property infringement, such as China or the Philippines. China continues to lead on most websites with content-related piracy, including the most viewed pirated movies on Netflix. The U. And the European Union are close behind in second place in this competition for the most infringed content. In fact, Europe makes up more than 3.5 billion unique IP addresses (which represent unique users) out of the 8.3 billion in total Internet traffic at work around the world. China is No. 1 in the number of patents in the world, and at almost three times as many as India an impressive feat when you take into account the size of their economy and their populations. According to a report by the World Intellectual Property Organization, China has about 19 million domestic patent applications out of a total of 6 billion filed worldwide a figure the report puts at 18.5%. India has 5.2% of patents worldwide but only 685,000 of them filed in China. That means that in one country we can count on less than one-third of a percentage of the patents worldwide and we can all assume that number is even higher for some other countries, like Japan or Germany.

The most patents in one country is a great achievement, but how does one country end up holding that many patents? And what can it really use them for? It turns out China has the most patents, not because they're any smarter or cleverer than anybody else, but because they have the best laws. The Chinese patent system is much better than the Japanese, and the US, said Robert Lee at Stanford's School of Engineering and Computer Science in a presentation at Google headquarters on Tuesday. The country has been making an effort for decades to make that a reality. In the 1950s, Mao Zedong issued the Five Principles of Patent System, which would eventually be codified into law. The result has been that from 1952 onwards, Chinese universities have been encouraged to seek patents. Today China leads the world in patent filings by a huge margin.

This, according to the IP Commission which, as I wrote last year, has developed a patent-pipeline model to estimate future patent applications for countries: shows a direct relationship between economic growth, education, and research, and the increasing number of new patent applications being filed each year. In fact, the United States, while having the second most patent applications in the world at 7.8%, only gets 17% of their income from patent licensing (according to a report from Bloomberg). In contrast, China gets about two-thirds of its revenue from this.
