Is Windscribe a safe VPN?
How much does it cost?
Is Windscribe secure?
Windscribe's biggest selling point is that it's 'The Smartest VPN for everyone'. Not only does the app keep your activities private, the company believes it has developed a network of more than 60 servers to ensure users get access to whatever they want and also protect them from viruses and malware attacks.
They even say that this is why it has been chosen by the UK government as their official cyber security solution, which means that you can rest assured when using the service with all the servers located in Canada. However, a review of its 'Privacy Statement' reveals something that isn't as advertised: it stores all of your browsing data for up to 30 days, and this can be accessed by law enforcement should they decide to. In fact, the company is obliged to comply with requests to decrypt the encryption keys used to encrypt that information, regardless of whether or not it wants to provide access to the data.
As a general rule, if you use an encrypted service that stores data unencrypted, chances are high that your activities are being monitored and are also likely to be seen by law enforcement, regardless of the country in question. With Windscribe's servers located in Canada, it doesn't really pay to use them while in the UK.
There's another downside to Windscribe's promise of privacy. The company states that All of our data is hosted in Canada.
That's a pretty big statement when you consider that it's possible to search the country's entire court database, which holds information about every prosecution since the Canadian charter was formed, through OpenCanada. With the average internet speed of North America at 6 Mb per second and the bandwidth provided by Windscribe at 250 kb per second, it's clear how this type of data collection could result in Windscribe's servers storing all of the information they're meant to protect users against. With such an insignificant bandwidth, it wouldn't take long for data collected by the Windscribe servers to make their way over the border to the United States, where law enforcement will have ready access to information relating to any activity that a user might have undertaken on Windscribe and any personal details they may have provided.
Does Windscribe support streaming?
The only thing I've yet to test is that when your in a group, you do not have access to each other's music.
Maybe this is not important to some people.
Is there still a limit of no more than 25 simultaneous players? No streaming has never been an issue for me, but it is always good to know what to expect and how it compares to other solutions. I've found that in the app the person whose name you're signed in with shows the first track, and that's the user control panel to find out if someone else is streaming or not. So, from what I can see, yes, you don't have access to others, unless you start your own group.
I thought that maybe it was a limitation in Windcove, but that sounds like just what I'm seeing as well! I love all the functions of this and the fact that it will work well with other apps in the future (like Apple music on iDevices) but there's one thing that keeps me back from really using it as my primary player - streaming. If it does NOT support streaming, then Windcove is a no go for me - and I'd probably end up sticking with Rhapsody/Rhapsody Unlimited. Or buying individual iTunes downloads from Amazon, etc. The downside of that is that both accounts would need to be within a certain set group. It has been the best solution for me so far.
Not sure if this was said, but it does sound like it's possible to have some kind of sharing or collaboration feature though. Does Windcove have the ability to have all members of a group see a specific track or album? I haven't dug into it too much but it seems like that'd be great.
I'd honestly like to see a way to have everyone in a group see a shared song.
