Does a VPN interfere with online gaming?
I'm going to be a bit of a contrarian here, so don't take this as my personal opinion.
VPN's are a great tool for any kind of internet usage, including gaming, as they mask your IP, and therefore help you stay anonymous. It's the same reason why you don't want your ISP to know what sites you visit. If you're a gamer, then it's obvious that you'd want to stay anonymous on the internet.
This is different than VPN's for general privacy or security. With VPN's, it's a trade off between privacy and security. The more secure you make yourself, the less anonymous you become. As such, you have to make your own decision as to whether or not you are okay with the security vs privacy trade off.
The key with a VPN is to get a VPN provider that will let you connect to whatever site you like. In other words, you should not need to use a VPN provider to use Steam, for example. The advantage of doing so is that Steam allows you to connect with just your normal internet connection, as opposed to the VPN you would need if you were connecting through a VPN to Steam.
As far as I know, there is no reason to believe that a VPN provider would affect your Steam connection. However, you should still check with Steam itself, as there is nothing that says a VPN provider can't mess up something on their end.

Protocol: L2TP/IPSec. L2TP/IPSec Quality: 4/5. NordVPN's protocol is highly recommended for gaming. In fact, any kind of tunneling protocol will work as long as it guarantees a high connection speed and privacy.
We didn't include OpenVPN in our analysis because it's slower than the other protocols on both security and speed and you may find that it's better to use a VPN for gaming with OpenVPN on your PC than on mobile. OpenVPN works with most Android and iOS devices, Windows PCs, Macs, Linux devices as well as mobile phones and tablets. But the VPN is known to be a bit on the slow side.
There is also a downside to choosing OpenVPN. In a test done by AV-Comparatives, it's quite easy to crack or get bypassed as mentioned in one of the results at the end of the post.
The reason being is that OpenVPN connections are made on the UDP standard. OpenVPN is a relatively new protocol and this is why it has certain weaknesses. The downside to choosing this protocol is that you don't have a guarantee that your data will remain private.
So far, there is no other protocol on our NordVPN review that has proven more effective and secure for gaming and streaming than the L2TP/IPSec protocol.
Can you use NordVPN while gaming?
So, I will be getting a new gamepad in a week.
(An xbox ONE controller with extra features and usb cable). Is it possible to use VPN for games when I am playing them? Will this interfere with my internet connection from my gaming system to the server? Are there any drawbacks to using a VPN while gaming? Can I use VPN as a security/anonymity tool, or is it only applicable for general internet browsing.
Yes you can use VPN while gaming. Some VPN services don't have any problems with gaming, and some even offer special gaming connections. Some are even offered exclusively by some network providers, such as Net10 and SoftBank.
VPN services that are not used primarily for gaming would likely have zero impact on game play as most VPN servers are configured to be extremely well-configured to not have any impact on normal traffic (other than tunneling it through their service). You may want to consider the following: Does the VPN provider offer you a gaming profile? Can the VPN service tunnel certain kinds of network connections to be more efficient, eg for streaming movies over your gaming network? Do you require a certain amount of anonymity? What is your level of experience with VPNs? It really depends on what type of gaming you play, and what you prefer.
