Does using a VPN affect gaming?

Is there any performance penalty for using a VPN? There have been posts elsewhere on this forum suggesting that there is no problem, but would like to know what peoples experience is. Using WIndows 7 Home premium with the latest Nvidia drivers. My graphics card is an 8800gt, and I'm running at an overclock of about 900MHz.

But since the real reason for logging on is a game (because it takes much time, and it is not efficient as typing everything out manually) then the fun part is the saving of time.
