The idea of using a VPN is to take that concept and allow you to use it so that every time you connect to the internet, you're communicating with the internet from an entirely different location, meaning that you won't have to worry about your online activity being monitored by someone else.

Why is that useful? If you think about it, the only people that would have any interest in monitoring your online activities would be the governments and the intelligence agencies, and those people have been known to engage in surveillance tactics such as hacking, cracking into private networks and tapping into telephone and e-mail traffic.

I have a question for those of you who are happy with your VPN provider: Do you ever have issues using Netflix?

I know some people use VPNs to help unblock their internet, but if you can explain how they work, that'd be great. I currently use the Hotspot Shield VPN, and it is working really well. So what happens when I open the Netflix app on my phone, go to the website and try to get on the Netflix service, I still get a message that says "Your region is not supported." The same thing happens when I open up the Netflix app on my tablet, so I know it's not just an issue in my area. But I'm afraid that all the time I have to put in to get a VPN up and running is completely taking away from my time spent watching TV. Is there a VPN that works well with Netflix?

I would recommend that you ask what type of server does Hotspot Shield use, and see what that entails in terms of speed. One of the better free VPNs is IPVanish. They have both OpenVPN and PPTP protocols.

I've used VPNs on Android devices for a while now, so here are my recommendations: OpenVPN - the best and most reliable server. The only downside to this is that you are giving the network administrator access to your VPN traffic. They can, however, be extremely helpful, as they can set up your device in many ways and be very knowledgeable about the device.

PPTP - usually not as fast as OpenVPN, but is also the cheapest option. L2TP/IPSec - not recommended. I don't think they support the required crypto to decrypt and reassemble.

If you are going to get a VPN, consider buying more than one so you can use them for different purposes. I use multiple for work, to stream television and for general use.

What VPN unlocking Netflix will cost you is the convenience of having one simple package for your needs. If that is too much of a hassle, then stick with your current configuration.

I recently noticed that Netflix has blocked VPNs on the iPhone and iPad.

Hi @macholingo. As a member of the Apple forums, I was able to find a solution that worked for me.

Here's how: Step 1: Open the VPN app on your iPhone or iPad (the free VPNs offered by most VPN providers work fine, although I found NordVPN worked better). Step 2: Open a VPN connection. In my case, I used NordVPN, but it may be different depending on the VPN provider.

Step 3: Open Netflix on your device, and try again. You should now be able to connect to Netflix using a VPN.

A lot of people asked why I waited 2 years before finally complaining about this. My situation is this: I use a number of VPN services. I use them all to access different content sources. If I try to use a VPN service to access Netflix, it works. If I try to use the same VPN service to access the BBC iPlayer, it doesn't work. So, the fact that I used a VPN for 2 years before finally complaining about this means that I was using a VPN to access the BBC iPlayer (which I actually did for 2 years, because it was one of the few ways to access BBC iPlayer outside of the UK), and not Netflix. This makes no sense.

The other issue here is that I only noticed this problem when I upgraded to iOS 9. I had previously been using iOS 9.1, which didn't have this problem. If you haven't noticed this problem, it means your iPhone or iPad is not at the latest iOS version.

So, to answer your question, it's a bit difficult to say. Either way, if you are accessing Netflix via a VPN, it should be working now.

Thanks for your reply! What I mean is, the IP that Netflix connects to when you are on their website is different than your IP address that you have when you are on your computer. For example, let's say you are currently using a VPN and have the IP address 192.168.0.10. If you browse to their website, your IP address will be changed to a different IP address. In your example, this could be 172.20. The issue is that when you are on your computer (not your phone or other device), your IP address will be 192. Netflix will still connect to your device from the IP address of 172. So, by trying to connect to 172.20, you will not be able to connect. This is the reason why the connection error message pops up.
