No, a VPN is a completely different product.

The VPN allows a person to create a private connection to an ISP and tunnel their internet traffic through their own private connection. Hotspot Shield does not have any tunneling capabilities.

You could use Hotspot Shield to bypass the firewall of your wireless network (if it has a firewall in place) but it would be for your own personal benefit, Hotspot Shield is for businesses that do business over the web. An alternate product called Private Internet Access might be more suited to you purposes (disclaimer, I haven't used this myself).

What is the free limit for Hotspot Shield VPN?

It was recently revealed that the new version of the Hotspot Shield VPN, which is now called Hotspot Shield Free, has been released with a free limit on its data usage.

While it's unclear how many users there are on the free plan, it does seem to have a different interface than the paid version, and the adverts and other features are removed, which may lead some users to believe it's a cheaper option.

The free limit of 1 GB per month is similar to other freemium apps, but the fact that there's a limit seems unusual. Even though the developers told TechCrunch they're only making the change "to see how much demand there is", the fact it has an online limit seems like it could put off users who want to use Hotspot Shield to access more content.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of the 1GB per month limit on the free version's product page. The adverts and other features are also missing. This may mean it's a very different service from the one for paying users.
