Is Flipd worth it?
My biggest question with Flipd is whether I should get one now or wait for the second generation.
And the answer is pretty much a resounding no. The first generation has the new camera with its amazing features such as the ability to record video and the flip screen, but it's missing a few things I expect from a camera of this type.
I want an HDTV out, a dual control thumbstick (instead of the d-pad only design) and the ability to upload video to YouTube in 1080p. I don't care about the extra battery size or the improved video recording time, and even without all three of those features, it's still an impressive camera. However, it's missing many features that would make it much better.
I've been thinking about an HDTV out or a flip screen, and I'm not thrilled with either option. The reason why? I don't have the room to have an HDMI cable connected to both TV and camera at once, and that may cost me the ability to connect the camera to another television set. That would make the camera far less useful. Flip screens are cool, but I haven't seen a flip screen that I like, and I haven't had time to watch a lot of YouTube videos on my phone while waiting for a video chat, so a flip screen isn't always going to work. Having a flip screen allows me to keep the screen on while I use other programs on my phone and TV, but in my experience they never display correctly. I haven't seen any videos or demos on this on Flipd's website, but I doubt it would display perfectly on a flip screen, too.
A dual thumbstick isn't the end-all-be-all for me. While it's nice that I can scroll around using the left thumbstick, there's just something off-putting about having to press down on the thumbstick with the right hand so I can scroll through menu options. If there was a way to turn off the d-pad and do more of the menu scrolling with the right thumbstick, that'd be a perfect solution. And I think the whole right-side control issue will bother some people a lot more than it will me. For what it does, it does it well.
