Surfshark has always supported IPv4 and IPv6. They even have an official page on their website, listing the protocols they support: If you're just interested in testing your IPv6 setup (which is good practice for any website), you can use the test page they provide for that. It does not. Surfshark claims to have tested IPv6 and has released a statement supporting that claim.

However, that is all they have said. Surfshark has never given any information on the details of how they support IPv6.

In particular, they have not answered questions like: Does IPv6 work the same as IPv4? What does this mean for a site which uses both IPv4 and IPv6? SurfShark supports IPv4 and IPv6.

There are many aspects of the new Google Public DNS service which appear to be impressive. However, you need to be aware that IPv6 is not used in it. This means it cannot address the needs of IPv6 clients. It will not provide "smart" filtering by website, country, or other criteria. You can use it only as a replacement for current DNS servers such as OpenDNS or the free service that comes with your router.

Google Public DNS (GPD) is an IPv6 replacement for the current DNS service in most browsers. It is designed to offer the same filtering and other services that the current DNS servers offer, but as an alternative. Unfortunately, Google has stated that GPD will not be able to support IPv6 users. As you can see from the article on Google's Blog, GPD does not have all the features that DNS provides. In addition, there is no filtering, only a generic "safe" replacement, and no IPv6 support. The only good news is that it is easy to get a GPD client.

One day after the launch of Google Public DNS, the search giant announced that the DNS server will not work with IPv6. So why did they do this? According to Google: "We expect a significant portion of Internet users will need to manually configure their client software to use the new DNS. Currently we only support the IPv4 version of our public DNS because we know that a significant number of Internet users use the current DNS today. While we understand that IPv6 has great technical benefits, we know that people use the current DNS without problems and we don't expect it to change significantly over time." However, they also admit that the vast majority of the Internet now uses IPv4. While the reason is unclear, Google's statement is somewhat misleading.

Google's new DNS is a replacement for the current DNS servers used by most browsers. To get it to work, you have to disable the built-in DNS service. You can still use the built-in DNS service, but it is merely an intermediary. What if you want to use IPv6 and enable the built-in DNS service at the same time?

Does Surfshark support Smart DNS?

I want to use Surfshark to host my DNS, but I don't see anywhere that it supports Smart DNS.

I see that it has an addon for Windows, but does it support Smart DNS on Windows? The current version of Surfshark doesn't include any DNS functionality, it's entirely a network monitoring tool. They've added some in-house DNS functionality but it's not open-source or in the public domain. You would need to contact them to get it.

They do have some free DNS services for Windows, Linux and Mac, but they are based on OpenDNS which you can get through Google, which supports smart DNS. UPDATE: They now offer OpenDNS with Smart DNS for free.
