As you noted, the VPN module has been removed from Edge. While some of the features () were included in Firefox's Network Service Manager, Google have decided they were going to change things up, in order to "enable the developer experience and ensure a better user experience on all platforms".

This essentially means that you can no longer use the VPN module with the browser on a device using Windows 10/8.1/7, iOS, Android or on macOS. On desktop it's also now no longer possible, as the previous way of allowing a VPN connection only supported Chrome OS (based on info from @rchlwilc).
