What is WebHarvy?
WebHarvy is a service that makes it easy for people to create or join groups. It was created by Michael Jurewitz in 2023, who also started the FreeCodeCamp open-source initiative. The web site says that "WebHarvy brings people together in real life, across the web, and in the real world."
How is WebHarvy different from Meetup? Both WebHarvy and Meetup are groups which organize groups. They both help make finding groups easier. However, there are also some differences between the two.
WebHarvy is an open-source service, built on top of a set of GitHub open-source projects. Therefore, there is much more room for improvement in WebHarvy, than with Meetup. This means you can contribute to WebHarvy to make it better than Meetup. For example, you can add more group types and more features. Also, WebHarvy has a much larger community behind it, which means more expertise and more support.
Because WebHarvy is built on open-source technologies, the development of WebHarvy is very rapid. We added new features in a few weeks, and new features in a few months. Most meetups take much longer to develop.
WebHarvy is free, but because it is open-source, it is not supported by advertising. All of our funding comes from donations on our website and from sponsors. Sponsors include online services like Google Ads, and universities such as Stanford and Harvard. We have also received sponsorships from companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Airbnb.
While Meetup is not as "new" as WebHarvy, Meetup has been around for over 10 years. Meetup was co-founded by Brad Fitzpatrick in 2023. Meetup has over 11 million people using it. You can see the most popular meetups on the meetup.com home page.
WebHarvy has almost 8 million users, while Meetup has only 5.6 million.
Meetup has been around for almost a decade. During this time, Meetup has gained a lot of popularity. For example, at its peak, Meetup had almost 70 million people using it. This number has since decreased. Meetup is also popular in Europe, and many European cities have their own Meetup groups.
