How to fix proxy settings in Windows 10?

Updated on September 26, 2026.

Windows 10 came with a new proxy setting which allows you to change your IP address. But some users cannot make this work or they have weird issues. So we have found a solution and tested it for you.

Microsoft released an update for Windows 10 and now there's a problem in the way they handle proxy settings in this OS. Some users can't change it. Some of them can't find the proxy settings and some of them have other weird problems.

The solution is simple: Use our trick, it works for all of you. It's a registry trick to change proxy settings in Windows 10 and you don't have to know anything about system hacks. Just use this guide and set the proxy to whatever you need.

The most common issue: the Proxy cannot be changed. If you want to use a Proxy server on the Internet, you will see that the Proxy settings don't appear. In this case, the reason might be the following: You haven't properly installed the update to Windows 10 (we recommend that you do). The update requires manual installation (for example if you use W10 Enterprise edition). You have a newer version of IE11 than the one which comes with Windows 10 (Windows 10 Pro, Home or Education). You can download IE11 here.

To check if the update is installed correctly, open the Start menu and search for Settings. You will see a shortcut to the Settings screen. Click on it and try to go to the Internet options. You will see an error. This means that the update is installed correctly.

If the update is not installed correctly, it means that the IE11 will be used instead of IE11. To solve this issue, you can delete the IE11 in the Programs and Features and replace it with the one you have.

After you finish the replacement, open the Settings app. Press the Options button in the bottom-left corner.

What is a proxy?

If you're like me, you've probably seen the advertisements on TV for that new service that will allow you to get better prices from your ISP. If you're lucky, the ad tells you that this service is a proxy server.

What is a proxy server? A proxy server is a computer software program that translates HTTP requests (the format used by web browsers to connect to websites) into IP packets and returns the corresponding webpages (and any other information in response to those webpages, including cookies, if you have them enabled). These packets are then sent across the Internet on behalf of the computer sending the request. You can think of the proxy server as an Internet circuit breaker. If a computer does not have its own router (for example, a computer using a dial-up connection), the web browser will not be able to access the Internet without one. However, the web browser can only use the internet to connect to a web site on a particular computer, so without a proxy server on that computer, the web browser can only reach that particular website. When the proxy server is working correctly, the computer requesting a website appears to be trying to connect to a different server than it really is. So the website's web server thinks it's talking to a different computer, but the proxy server (which knows which IP address is being requested for by the web browser) actually answers the request. The web server sees this answer and thinks the request comes from a different IP address than it really does. The web server then redirects the incoming web page to the IP address that sent the request.

How a proxy server works. The problem with making your own proxy server is that you can't tell if a request you receive for a website you have set up is a real request or a simulated request. This is called a spoofing attack, and if you could do it to a person, you would call it an identity theft attack. An identity theft attack attempts to use your personal information (name, credit card number, social security number, etc.) to make you give out more money than you intended to. I'm sure most people reading this have had their identities stolen, and there are companies that specialize in this type of attack.

How do I turn off proxy?

My university gives students remote desktop control access to their Windows 10/Pro system through their network.

They have set up that remote desktop connection to allow the students to bypass any proxy on their university network. Every time I connect to the remote desktop I am forced to use a proxy server which is terrible for any productivity. I can't connect to any website without hitting my proxy every time (I believe it's trying to connect to some university website to retrieve data on student ID's).

How do I use the setting where students may only use a proxy server, like when connecting to a public WiFi hotspot at Starbucks or something similar? You'll need to edit your RDP client settings before your connect. Here is Microsofts description: When using the Remote Desktop Connection application built into Windows, the following two steps will be helpful. However, if you are going to use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (Mrdc), instead of Remote Desktop Connection built into Windows, here is a useful step by step guide on Bypassing the Public Proxy: Step 1: To use Mrdc, open Start Menu > All Apps > Windows. PowerShell. Type powershell and press Enter key to open Windows PowerShell and type cmd > Run. In the following command, change Replace with the domain name you are. wanting to connect to. Enter: RDPCLIENT //computer.address.example.com//remoteuser
Replacing the computer.com with your host computer, remoteuser for your remote user and in your case.

Click OK and Enter to the System Properties. When opening Mrdc, we will see that our connection works as expected without being forced to use a proxy.

How to disable proxy permanently in Windows 10?

I recently updated to the latest windows 10 version.

I was doing some network tests using different proxies using the software called "Nmap" I'm from Greece and I need a very fast connection so I'm using "proxy" which is fine for me since I don't have the same restrictions as you all. Recently, I discovered that Microsoft decided to ban many software such as "Nmap". So I uninstalled that one in an attempt to better behaved than those "drones" that are not allowed to use proxies. Unfortunately, I still cannot access Google using proxies (I need to use proxies). Does anyone know how to disable proxies in windows 10? Thanks in advance.

Open the registry key: HKEYCURRENTUSERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAppxBundleProxies. There you should see a setting called HKEYCURRENTUSERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAppxBundleProxies. Delete that value. That will stop proxy use.
