Taken from the book A Rose for Emily by Carson McCullers. If people have questions about you, the best answer is to come out and tell them what you think about yourself; whether you are too big or too small, intelligent or stupid, beautiful or ugly, too rich or poor, and to do so with an open face. But most importantly, come out because no one else can do it for you. There's no substitute for coming out, for speaking from the heart. Carson McCullers

My name is John Wylie and I am a person. Or more accurately, I am several people.

When I was a little kid I lived in a world that was much simpler than it is today. I loved coming out of the house at 6:00am in the morning, wearing my old black socks and gray sweat shirt. And I loved going to school. For the first few years of my life I attended an elementary school that was located in a large town called Santa Clara. The school had a cafeteria and we usually had lunch at the cafeteria. A large part of my childhood memories and experiences at the school came from our teachers who were always doing interesting and important things. One of these interesting and important things was that they brought us flowers almost every week.

I remember that we had to go around to each class and pass out flowers as gifts to our classmates. We had to be careful that none of the flowers were left lying on the floor. If one of the students saw a flower on the floor, he would take it home to his mother or father and he would know he had failed to keep his dignity intact and had been rude. However, when the teacher gave us the flowers, she would hand the bag of flowers to someone in the class and this was to be kept secret until were all back in our classroom. And that was why the teacher made sure that there weren't any flowers on the floor. The rule was that no one could know who had passed out the flowers. If we found out the identity of the person who had given us the flowers were in trouble.

And, when it was time to pass out the flowers it would always start with Mrs. Brown. There was one little girl who had no mother. And that was the reason Mrs.
