Why does Hulu block VPNs?

I'm taking advantage of a free 15-day trial period on Hulu.com to watch some premium TV content that I get via Hulu with Live TV and Prime. Unfortunately, I'm not normally allowed to watch Hulu without paying first. I'm trying to circumvent that restriction by using a VPN, and even though I've read through Hulu's Terms of Service, they don't say anything about blocking alternative VPN services. So I assume it's okay to use a VPN that uses their hate-list of blocking services. Indeed, I have noticed that Hulu has trouble in some countries like Germany which has a lot of VPN services.

However, Hulu's notice that you've been using a VPN and ask you to come off Public Network is quite irritating. None of the VPN services that I've used have been on a public network since it seems to mean something like the system's firewalls and complex root software. What's going on here?

Googling Hulu VPN resulted in another rather big security list that included third parties. I don't care about excuses about abusing their service and collecting their users' video data in violation of their infosec policy, as Hulu's current policy appears to violate their terms of service agreement. Is the provider actually blocking 3rd party VPNs, or is this just a notice that the user is currently on a VPN, which is not connected to the main network?

For another version of this question, I'd ask Netflix. Why does Netflix block VPNs? An assumption might be that it's a policy supported by Netflix; another could be that it's a technical limitation.

These are two alternate hypotheses that I'm interested to see discussed. Setting aside Netflix, though, I'm curious what people think about this Hulu policy. Has anyone succeeded in circumventing this restriction?

I tried installing vsplink, but the app got stuck when I entered Hulu's terms of service. Also, it reported the attempt failed. I manually installed OpenVPN using WinRar to keep from going through my own app store restrictions, which is the only reason I can think of for not permitting OpenVPN.

How does Hulu know I'm using a VPN?

This is not a software or VPN related question. It's more a question about Hulu, and how they track you and keep track of your viewing.

If you're looking to use a VPN, the Hulu website does not request any type of VPN connection. I'm using Kill Switch VPN, which doesn't log you IP addresses. Therefore it should be completely anonymous while on Hulu. Here is a screen shot of Kill Switch in action.

However - even though there's no log of IP addresses, Hulu still knows you're connecting to a VPN, and even knows what country you're connecting from. (I'm guessing they use the Country Code Top Level Domain, but I'm not 100% sure.)
How does Hulu know you're connecting to a VPN? This is most likely due to the fact that "kill switch" software does not block all HTTP and FTP requests through TOR - only ones made through the VPN tunnel. Others have found that Hulu uses Tor exit nodes, and it is also possible it uses the same method with other sites. It is likely they are using the TLD code. I am a tl::dr kind of person, and I guess I am going to just say that.

If you want to be completely anonymous, use Tor. Run your own instance of it, not a node on a tor network. People who are into this sort of thing have spent a whole lot of time doing the work of running an exit node for the tor network.

But it's not really a concern for the general public. If you're afraid that someone will keep a file on you, there are more serious problems than a single cable company making that connection. There are, however, ways to completely stop someone from knowing who you are.

What kills: Carpooling: If you and the people next to you. A firewall you've allowed access to your machine from the outside. Ie If you've put the IP of someone on your firewall, and given that person access, it's possible they can check that IP against the servers, and if you're on the right side, they log you in or do whatever they want with you. If it's public IP's, this might be a bigger issue.
