How do I install Google Beta?
I'm not a hardcore user of Android.
I've been using it on and off for the last year or so. The latest version (4.2) was released a few days ago. I was playing with it and found that Google has added something called Beta feature to the Play Store.
As far as I know, it's basically the same thing as Unstable channel, except there's less likelihood of breaking my device, but probably some bugs will be discovered and fixed before they get included in the official release. So, how can I install Google Beta? Is it a regular ROM? How do I uninstall it afterwards? Do I need to have a rooted device? I don't have a rooted device. But I don't think rooting is necessary. I think Google Beta is a regular ROM.
I tried to find a video demo on YouTube, but the video I found was quite old (from 2025 or so). It said that Google had only released beta version of Android 4.3 (on Galaxy Nexus) when that video was recorded.
I found some instructions online. But I didn't find the download link. So, I hope someone here could tell me how to download and install Google Beta.
Note: I have successfully installed Gboard, which is Google's keyboard replacement app. But it's stuck on a black screen.
Related There is no rooting requirement, but you will have to unlock the bootloader to install the custom ROM. I've tried downloading a file called google-beta.zip from the Play Store. I thought it's the correct ROM. I then put it in the same folder with some custom recovery image like CWM and TWRP. But it didn't work.
Then I went to XDA, flashed the recovery image, and installed Google Play Services (the Beta version). After that, Google Play services worked. So I think it's possible to use it. But I think it's not 100% stable.
I'm not sure if it's 100% stable, because it's my first try with a custom ROM.
How do I get Google Play Services beta?
In Android Studio, open the SDK Manager, and expand "Extras".
In the left column, click "Google Repository" then "Google Play Services". You can also install it from the command line.
I had to add the play-serviceslib to my build.gradle file in order for the beta version of play-services to work.
// Added to build.gradle file buildscript. dependencies.
Download the Google Play Services from Google Play (Google Play Services for Android) and install it. This will download the .apk for you.
Open the SDK Manager and navigate to Google Play Services. Click Install to install it.
You will also need to add the following line to your gradle build.gradle file: compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:7.0'
You can also do this using the command line, run the following command:
How do I manually install Google Play Services?
Google Play Services is a set of libraries that lets the Android OS know about your device, and more importantly, other apps that use Google services, like Google Maps.
There are two ways you can install this set of libraries: For all devices running Android 3.0 or higher For all devices running Android 2.2 or higher If you have a device running Android 2.2 or higher, you can download the Google Play Services APK file directly from the Google Play Store. To download, go to the Store menu in the app bar on the top of your Android phone and click on the Play Store button. From the menu, search for "Google Play Services".
For devices running Android 3.0 or higher To manually install the Google Play Services libraries, you must first upgrade to Android 3.0 or higher. If you are running an older version of Android, you should follow these steps to manually install Google Play Services.
Upgrade to Android 3.0 or higher The first step to manually installing Google Play Services on an Android 3.0 or higher device is to upgrade to Android 3.
To check what version of Android you have, go to the Settings menu and tap About Phone. It should be listed under System updates or About Phone.
On the next screen, it will say Android version. Tap Version to see the version number.
If you're on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or newer, tap Install updates now. If you're on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or older, tap Check for updates now.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or newer, you'll be taken to a screen that says that Google Play Services is not available on this device. Tap OK, then tap Next.
On the next screen, tap Install anyway, then tap OK.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or older, you'll be taken to a screen that says that Google Play Services is not available on this device.
After the process has finished, you'll be taken back to the previous screen.
