What does Lagos mean in Portugal?
Lagos is the Portuguese form of the Spanish Lagos, a town on the south coast of Spain. In Portugal it's a city on the Atlantic ocean, at the end of the estuary of the Rio Douro, and a port on the Atlantic.
In Portugal, "Lagos" is often used to refer to the entire region around it: the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, or simply the Greater Lisbon area. But when Lagos refers to a city (and the Greater Lisbon area has the largest population of any city in the country), it's usually the city itself, not the region around it.
Lagos is the capital of the Portuguese State of Alentejo. It was a part of the kingdom of Leon until 1112, when it passed to the Moors, who ruled it until 1249, when it passed back to the Christian Kingdom of Portugal.
The name Lagos comes from the Roman Latin Labocorida, which means "harbour of Labocorus", derived from the Greek Labocoros, a city in Asia Minor, near which the first Portuguese explorers (Gonalo Gil and Affonso Gonalves) arrived in 1418. This first harbour was on the mouth of the Rio Douro. However, its exact location isn't known.
There were several ports along the Rio Douro before this one was selected. The name Lagoa (or Lagoa, Lagoa or Lagoa do Infante) is the local name for the city in Portugal and Alentejo.
History. Alentejo is a historical province of Portugal and in past times an important route of communication. Alentejo was the last province of Portugal that was controlled by the Moors. It was reconquered by the Portuguese army of King Afonso I in 1112, and the new city of Lagos was founded in 1143, between the two great estuaries of the Alentejo, the Vouga and the Sado. The early settlement was based around an old Roman city, which was almost certainly Labocorida or some other place with similar name.
In 1195, the Knights Templar occupied the site of the present-day city and built a castle.
