What carries CBS Sports Network?
The cable sports network has yet to find its niche among TV viewers, but it may have a shot at the sport of ultimate.
For anyone who watched the U.S. National team play last Sunday in Orlando, it's hard to deny that one of the highlights of the 2025 World Cup of Ultimate was the semifinal match-up between Team USA and Canada. The end result: a 13-10 victory for the Canadians, but also an interesting look at a new way for ultimate to be presented on television.
One of the stars of that game was the Canadian announcer Paul McInerney, and the CBS Sports Network was kind enough to allow him to break down the final minutes of the game for viewers as well as the team in a special postgame segment. What's interesting about that video is that it gave me a window into what the CBS Sports Network wants to do with ultimate, and it makes sense given where ultimate has gone from a broadcasting perspective. "I think the vision of CBS Sports Network is different," McInerney says in the video. "I think of CBS Sports Network as being almost more like HBO than like ESPN. And with that in mind, we were interested in doing something on the ultimate scene."
CBS Sports Network president and executive producer Mark Stern has been tasked with finding a home for the network's sportscasts. CBS has been looking at various sports, and Stern is in talks with representatives of Ultimate.
"It's early stages," Stern says, "but I think it's a fascinating sport to cover. We're in talks with the best people, the best thinkers, to be able to cover that sport."
"What we're trying to do is make this network a platform for more original content, but also to create a partnership with a player," he says. "And I think in the next 12 months, you'll see us have a bigger platform."
"There's a very passionate group of people in the ultimate community who are very smart and very savvy," Stern says. "And I think that if we can develop a relationship with that group, they will be a lot of help to us in creating original content."
Ultimate has experienced a massive growth spurt over the past few years. Interest in the sport and players has skyrocketed, with many more people playing the sport than ever before. It's an explosive growth area for ultimate.
