I've been a user of social media for a long time but I've only recently noticed this term.

My friends have never used this term but to me it's what the Internet has become. In many cases, when I visit a website I am presented with pages of advertising. The more that I come across these things, the more that I realise how much of the web is covered in junk content. What does it mean and where did it come from?

We'll get to where all this came from in a moment but the first thing you need to know is what crawling content is. Essentially it's when a search engine spider uses artificial intelligence to try and access content on a site. It will do so by following links on a site or through robots.txt files on a website. This means that if you don't want search engines to be able to crawl a website then you can make sure that they don't access those URLs by using robots.

Robots.txt File The robots.txt file is used by a website to tell robots that they are not allowed to go somewhere on the website. There are two types of robots. These are the user and non-user files.
