Google's WiFi at Home app lets you use Google WiFi hardware in your home for free. Are wireless routers really just that fast? The best routers are the newest ones. In an attempt to keep prices down and increase speed, manufacturers have added lots of new features to improve speed and reliability, including things like MIMO (multiple in, multiple out) radios for faster wireless speeds, faster processors, and smart algorithms that learn how you use the router and optimize throughput based on that. This can result in higher connection speeds on the whole.

Is WiFi Map free?

By David Vintner - Published: November 10, 2023. I was looking into a recent project at the library where I teach. The purpose of the project is to collect data on public WiFi hotspots throughout our state. We've already compiled some basic statistics on these hotspots, including the number of users in our area and the range of devices that use the hotspots.

Because it's the first time we've used this project, we decided to have some fun with it. I wanted to make a map that could show a list of all the hotspots currently operating in the United States. I thought that if we could do this, we'd really be creating an interesting public service.

My students have been helping with the project, but they didn't want their names on the map, so I named it the "WiFi Map." The map can be found at (note the .com).

This project has been a huge learning experience for me. As far as I know, this is the first time anyone has taken a project that involves using open data and made a visual representation of it. It's been fun teaching these students about the power of mapping and visualization, and I feel like we've achieved something really big.

But that's all in the future. For now, I want to hear your feedback. We're hoping to make this map more interactive, so would love to hear your comments or suggestions for other things we could add.

One of the things that impressed me the most when I was researching public data is that there's not really a great way to gather that information. If you want to see the number of users in your area, for example, you have to call or visit each hotspot to get this information. This map is just the first step in taking all of that information and turning it into an interactive map.

It seems to be that most hotspot information isn't readily available. Sure, people publish their own data, but how many people do that? How often is it updated? The problem is that in most cases, the only way for anyone to find this information is by either getting it from the website that publishes it, or finding someone who worked on the project and ask them for the information. These people, of course, aren't always willing to help.

Does WiFi Map really work?

The thing about WiFi Map is that I was actually curious about how useful it would be in the house. I can't help myself because as a freelancer, I never travel far and I have to rely on WiFi in my apartment for pretty much everything. In fact, WiFi has become my only network and I have no other internet service provider except for a few mobile data bills every month which adds up.

Anyway, just like my last article about Google Chrome, I can't say I'm a huge fan of the application but I know quite a number of people use it in the office so I had to look into it. So let's find out together.

Let's briefly introduce WiFi Map, a tool created by Google back in 2023. It allows you to look at the signals from WiFi routers throughout your neighborhood to determine where you have access to wifi network and which ISP it is.

As you can imagine, this tool has quite the usefulness. It allows you to choose exactly where you want to test your connection by clicking on each signal and it will be color-coded for you (I assume it uses some sort of algorithm). So we should go through some of the pros and cons of the app.

The only con I see is the lack of detail. As this tool is intended to find signal strength and quality as it does not try to find the underlying network, the app doesn't show whether it's a cellular connection. It simply tells you what kind of WiFi access point it is and its name. That way, if you want to get more details on the connection type you can dig deeper on the official website.

However, I think what would make this app even better would be the added features it could have. By default, it only displays the name of the router and its brand. If it were able to find the underlying connections, it would be even better. To sum it up, while I do think it's pretty cool and works great for the occasional user, I don't think it's the best tool available if you are in charge of many connections or need to set up your home router.
