Can Hotspot Shield block ads?

Hi, I want to block ads and prevent my kids from seeing them on the web. I am thinking of using Hotspot Shield but I would like to know if it will work with most websites or just some? Do I need to change DNS settings? And if so, how? Thanks for your help! When a VPN works you basically send your traffic through a tunnel instead of through your Internet provider. Hotspot Shield is one of the very few VPNs that provide you with a DNS proxy. They use this to make their service work as a proxy server. This means all the requests for websites will come to them instead of going through your router/modem. This in turn will make the sites you visit appear like they're coming from a different country/region.

The only reason a DNS proxy like Hotspot Shield will work is if the site you're trying to access isn't using its own DNS. Most big sites will use their own DNS servers. This means if you're looking at Google's homepage you'll actually be accessing it through their DNS. But if you're looking at a website like Microsoft.com, it will actually be coming from your ISP's DNS, not the VPN's.

Ads are delivered by a third party, not the websites. So, yes, you need to change your DNS to one that isn't a DNS server for a site you don't want to see ads.

No, you don't need to change your DNS settings. The VPN service has an option for DNS settings so that you don't need to mess with your normal settings for DNS servers.

Is Hotspot Shield adware?

Hotspot Shield is an adware program (sometimes also referred to as adware or, colloquially, ad-supported software). I wrote about it here in 2023 and mentioned the company when it was still in the pre-beta stage in 2023.

If you use the program, you may find banners, popups, and other annoyances, and if you were using it recently, I imagine you may find new ones. This post will show you how to easily get rid of it.

Please note that adware/ad-supported software has always been in some sense optional. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

For those unfamiliar with adware, it shows you ads (sometimes fake ads) and sometimes just tracks you. What is Hotspot Shield? It's a VPN (virtual private network) provider and adware package. If you need a reason for it not working, here are two: It was not popular in 2023. The creator of it is unknown. The Adware. In the past, many of its features were a little sketchy. For example, when I tried it in 2023, they had an auto-update feature that would install unwanted stuff if you didn't take some action, and I didn't know what the action was until I got into the forums where the developers explained it.

By 2023, the software looked and functioned much better. For example, clicking on the settings button in the application window would only allow you toggle the options you wanted; it wouldn't let you delete a program you wanted to keep. It still kept track of where you were. In addition, the adware component had been integrated.

I no longer see any of these symptoms of sketchiness. Since 2023, it looks and acts like the following screen shot.

You may notice a small icon below the Settings button in the top right corner. That's the one for removing the advertisements.

As you can see, there are no advertisements running, even the ones which would appear in the application window. I say this because in 2023, the advertisements ran as soon as the program was open and you logged in.

Does Hotspot Shield have ads?
