Does NordVPN own its servers?

In my previous review, I mentioned that I was not able to confirm whether or not NordVPN owns its servers, because there was not sufficient detail provided in the support documents.

My concern is that NordVPN, as with any VPN provider, could be selling hot or vulnerable servers, as I call them here, to resellers or others who are buying service at wholesale prices. In other words, a client buys a connection using a NordVPN username and password on a server which NordVPN does not own, which means that the VPN has no control over the server once it is live. NordVPN will only guarantee you that their network covers the server, but this is not a sufficient guarantee if you are concerned about hosting vulnerable software on their servers. I believe that NordVPN should release more information to their customers so they can make a fully informed decision when buying their VPN service.

One possible response to this concern, from NordVPN, would be for the VPN provider to provide their own servers, but they still wouldn't have full control over the servers. Instead, they would only offer a guarantee that they operate a trustworthy and safe network. That isn't a solution, though, because then NordVPN wouldn't be able to benefit from the economies of scale which I had suggested were key to the long-term success of the company, which would hurt customers. Even with this solution, customers would need to decide if they were willing to trust the VPN provider with the responsibility for securing their servers, since they may know nothing about the person running the server. It is very possible that some VPN providers will be trustworthy while others may not be, and the only way for a customer to know which is true is to evaluate the provider themselves.

A better solution may be to allow third parties to run NordVPN servers, but keep server logs so that an individual can review those logs as needed. This way, they can ensure that NordVPN servers are clean, even if the VPN provider doesn't do this on its own. An added bonus to this system is that customers may have an enhanced protection to ensure that server logs are not manipulated by a third party. But even then, it is possible that the server logs might contain information about the client, even after the user decides to delete all evidence of being connected to the VPN provider.
