What Do Yellow Camellias Symbolize?
In our culture camellias symbolize the beginning of spring and the hope for a new season, but the blossoms are a reminder of things past and lost, which may be the cause of melancholy.
The Chinese believe that a full-blown flower is an omen of joy, while a broken or withered one is an omen of sadness or mourning. Many people consider the beauty of the petals to be an indication of the character of the blossoms' owners, so was the love in this story real?
The story of the yellow camellia begins with the legendary Queen Camellia, who was considered the most beautiful woman in all of China. She ruled the state of Ch'ang-shan (modern day Hsinchu) with grace and justice for 14 years, then left to be reborn in heaven. She is said to have had the most lovely skin in the land, but she was also a woman of many parts, because she could fight like a man, dance like a boy, and make love like a woman. Unfortunately, it seems that this queen had a sadistic side too. Legend has it that after her death, the spirit of the camellia she wore around her neck took revenge upon her, turning her hair white, her teeth yellow, and her nails black. As the years passed, her hair grew to such great length that it brushed the ground, her teeth filled out to the point of overgrown, and her nails grew long enough to scratch through the ground. By the time that she grew to old age, the camellia's vengeance had turned the earth into a desert, causing the people to starve. However, the spirit of the camellia didn't let this stop her from causing her to be reincarnated on earth for several generations, until a young man named Shao Tzu came along. He found her deep in the wilds and carried her home.
Shao Tzu fell in love with the woman and eventually married her. A few years later, he was sent to the army, and was later forced to leave his wife behind. But he always thought of her and how much he missed her. After 15 years, he returned home, and again went to court. When he returned home, he found his wife was ill, and not long after she died.
What do camellia flower colors mean?

There are many different types of camellias - they differ in growth habits, growth form, flower color, size, petal shape, the number of flowers, bloom time, and plant variety. As with most things in gardening, there is a range of opinion among florists as to which camellias offer the most desirable flower color. The range of acceptable colors is based upon what the horticulturist considers the colors for garden beds and for plant massing. This is a very subjective definition, and it can be argued that in many cases, the horticulturist (or the consumer) is using rose-colored glasses or tinted sunglasses. Even the best-tolerant horticulturist often has a hard time selecting desirable flower colors.
Camellia flower color. First of all, if you plan on propagating camellias from seed - which I highly recommend for those new to camellias - it is not only important to understand the flower colors, but also the growth habit of each variety. The majority of the early camellia and hybrid camellia varieties have upright, semi-upright and cascading growth habits. As with most garden flower bulbs, the longer-standing camellias have semi-upright growth habits (in this case, only for mature plants), and they do not need to be pruned in the flowering season. In fact, the camellia flower bud color is determined by the cultivar. Early and some medium bearing grew into larger flowers in early summer - before leaf color began to change. However, many cultivars produced smaller flowers and continued to grow through the summer into autumn. In the fall when the foliage begins to change color, the camellias are still producing flowers and the flowers begin to change color too. If you are selecting camellias for mass plantings, they must show some form of floral maturity in their early growth phase (semi-upright habit), or the entire plant will change character once the flowering season is past. Camellia species are more tolerant of slower growing habits. Once again, the best-tolerant camellia is going to be the plant that is grown from seed in your garden!
What Month Do Yellow Camellias Flower?
I planted three camellias about two months ago and am just now seeing some blossoms.
The flowers are bright yellow, not red. They bloom for about 3 weeks then turn brown. The next day the flowers are gone. How do I know when to plant them again? The blooms are about 3/8" wide. Thanks!
I'm assuming you live somewhere that gets cool, not cold. You'll want to plant them when the soil is warm but not too hot. That's when they grow most quickly. If the weather's warm and it's sunny then you can plant them in May, June, July, August or September. If it's in January or February and the soil is still cold, you should plant them in March.
If you're planting your camellias in containers, they'll bloom any time between spring and fall, depending on the weather. There's a few types of camellias that bloom in winter, like the 'Evergold' and 'Snow White', but they're not as showy.
They will bloom all season long here in southern Texas. When I look at my flowers, the leaves seem to be brownish-yellow. And they turn red and then yellow and brown as the season progresses. I have a camellia from the nursery that was planted in February that looks great. I hope you are enjoying your plants, because they are very rewarding to grow.
I planted mine in January so they would bloom in late April. I planted them in the soil that was meant to be planted in the spring so I was hoping to get them blooming by April. I planted them in a container with a potting soil and then after they bloomed I fertilized them. I put a blanket around them to keep them warm in the daytime. I can't seem to get them to bloom again!
A friend who had a lot of luck with camellias told me to wait until April before I put them in the ground. I've been trying for months and the blossoms just don't appear. I've got a few in a small pot and they are flowering now. It is the end of July here and the blooms are a bit larger than when I planted them in March. It doesn't look like they will bloom anymore. I was disappointed to see that they were just beginning to change color from yellow to red to brown.
Is there a yellow camellia?
That, I knew, was my cue to leave.
"I will go," I said. "Thank you for your hospitality."
He didn't answer. I looked at the room. It was a mess. A bed was unmade; the floor was dusty and there was dirt under the nails of the doors. This man had been living in squalor. His clothes were so filthy that they were more gray than brown. But he had a face that was beautiful in its way. It was a face that had suffered but not given up hope.
I felt the urge to be kind to him, and I said, "This must have been difficult." "I am used to hardship," he said. "Why are you here?" I asked. "What does it matter? It's over." "What is?". "All of it. The war."
"That is good," I said. "A war is not won until it is over."
"How much can one human soul give of itself?" he asked. "No one knows," I said. "You may speak with me, please," he said. I stayed, and we talked about the weather. We sat on opposite sides of the table and ate the stew, which was delicious.
"I have no water," he said, gesturing toward the faucet. "I have a jug, though it is a bit dirty," I said. I did not want to speak of myself or my life, yet somehow he wanted to know. When I told him about my youth, his eyes welled up.
"You never married? "No," I said. "I didn't love enough to wait."
"I was the same way," he said. "The war came. I had to fight it."
"I thought it was over," I said. "The war will not end," he said. "The human race will suffer until it is gone. Then the animals will come to the surface and take care of us. There will be no more war."
I said, "The war will end. Man will go back into the dark."
"It is impossible," I said.
