How to set L2TP VPN on Android TV?

Here we will discuss ? What is VPN (Virtual Private Network) in simple terms? It is a service which helps you secure your data while you go surfing through the Internet. Basically, it creates a private area where you can connect from the private network to the public network and thus your data which you are sending through this private network get encrypted and thus can be only seen by the server. And this entire process is done without your involvement. You just need to create a connection for example from your home to your company's server and all your details get hidden in the encrypted format. Thus, it is called as Virtual Private Network or VPN. A normal connection will not be enough if you need some privacy. Thus, you need to make use of a Virtual Private Network, and it is available for Android mobiles too. But before we understand how to setup VPN on Android TV, we should know what is VPN and how it works.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, this network encrypts your traffic on a dedicated communication channel and then passes the encrypted signal to the web server. This VPN connection is usually established over the internet. The IP addresses used for establishing this connection come from various places on the net.

VPN uses IPV4 or IPV6 protocol. IPV4 protocol is very old. So, its speed and stability is not suitable for high volume of bandwidth consuming internet traffic. Also, it cannot be used for streaming as bandwidth increases with increase in data usage. So, now most of the people are using the IPV6 protocol for their VPN.

How to Set Up L2TP VPN for Android TV? Now here comes the most interesting part. How to Setup L2TP VPN in Android TV? Isn't it an easy task? Actually no, it is much more than that. For the novice users, it may be the same task but for more experienced and advanced users it can be complex process. There are three things which must be remembered for all the L2TP connections. These are:

User name. Password. Domain name or Subdomain. If you get them right, then you have completed the process. Let us now jump into the technical process of setting up VPN. Here I will also provide you the link from where you can download the best L2TP VPN for your Android TV.

How do I enable OpenVPN on Android?

You need to install 2 apks. One for Google Play Store, and the other is for Google Play Services. You can install both apks from this link: (Google Play Services) and (OpenVPN).

OpenVPN app. OpenVPN has a simple installation process. Once downloaded, you just need to drag OpenVPN app to your home screen and it will automatically start downloading everything needed for the server connection.

VPN server setup: The VPN server setup is quite easy. The default name of the server will be in italics. For example: myvpn is the default name, and you can change it to whatever you want. The server address (IP) will be listed in bold. In your case, the server address will be 192.168.178.1, which means that you will connect to the OpenVPN server using TCP port 1194 (I think this number is only for the OpenVPN server, and different clients will use different port numbers).

Once you are done with your network configuration settings, go to 'settings' and enter your credentials if they are specified there. Remember that if you are using a new device, it might take some time to get connected, so if it doesn't happen immediately, wait for some time. For example, I had to do a factory reset and then add my credentials again, but it worked this time. However, even after doing this it took some time to connect.

After connecting to the VPN, your network settings may become lost because you didn't specify a custom VPN location, so you need to set it up manually now. For Windows and Mac, go to 'settings' and you should see the icon that looks like a magnifying glass inside the settings. Tap on this icon and then go to VPN Connections. Then tap on the 'Add VPN Connection' option and fill out the connection settings. On Windows go to Network and Sharing Center and select VPN connections from the list. Then click on the 'Connect to VPN' option. Fill out the connection details. For more information on VPN settings refer to the guide here.

For Android, you can't do this.

Does OpenVPN work on Android?

Since it's a VPN tunnel you will probably need to have root access to your android. Some android phones have the capability of allowing root access by default (if your device has Android 4.2) so you should be good to go there. However if you find it's not possible and don't feel comfortable with rooting your phone then you will have to set up your VPN on an emulator. Let's look at each of these steps in order.

Step 1 - Setup OpenVPN on the Emulator. When starting an OpenVPN server on Android you can just follow the instructions from this blog post: . This has the benefit of automatically setting up the default settings for you and setting up a simple configuration file. However the user needs to specify the following two configurations in order to enable the default routing table:

Routetable: '0.0' add default icmpecho 0.0 routedelay 0 default metric 100 add default vpnmasquerade routedelay 0

While the command above specifies the default values, you can actually modify the routing table as you like using a config file. This config file will be used with vconfig, and this is what I did in the following steps.

Step 2 - Create a OpenVPN config file. In this step you will make use of the vconfig command, which is a tool that helps us do most of the work in setup an OpenVPN server on Android. I have created a basic OpenVPN config file for you. You may wish to edit this and customize it for your system.
