What month do camellias grow?

When should I buy camellia plants?

We are now well into April and it's a crucial time for buying these bulbs. Camellias must be bought in late winter, just before the spring flowering display is due to be in full swing.

The spring flowering display will continue from March to July. Some will display yellow flowers at this time, others won't, depending on their origin.

This is the time of year when you need to know where your bulbs come from. If you are buying these bulbs as 'spring bulbs', where they grew for 6-12 months until they were ready to flower, you'll need to ask the grower or retailer what their origin is. These bulbs have spent much of their life outdoors and they can vary a lot in their outdoor conditions.

As the spring comes around, they'll start showing more signs of ageing. With time, their growth will slow down and the leaves will turn yellow or brown, depending on your species. When your bulbs are bought, choose those which are still green and glossy, avoiding those which look older.

When buying bulbs of the winter flowering types, such as 'Sakurasou' and 'Bijou', you don't have to worry about the outdoor conditions or growth rates of your bulbs. There's no need to talk to the retailer about their origin, because all you need to know is that they were grown in containers indoors for the winter. So you're buying them as 'winter flowering', not 'spring'.

Buying in shops or garden centres. Camellias are sold in different ways, depending on where you're buying them. You can buy camellias 'for sale' from a gardening centre, but many are also sold by a plant hire firm, a specialist supplier, a nursery or even by someone else.

They'll either be sold from a pot or in the ground. Many plants are sold through specialist suppliers or nurseries, who will have an established stock of plants. This makes them easy to buy and gives you peace of mind as to their performance, but means you don't know exactly where they come from.

Are camellia plants easy to grow?

In a word, no.

If you haven't done it already, check this out and follow these instructions; I guarantee, this will be the best investment you make. So, adding more nitrogen, phosphorous or potash to your lawn isn't going to make it grow or blossom into a lovely camellia. The proper solution is to provide proper nutrition, then allow the plant to determine the amount of nutrients it needs based on how well-fed it becomes. It simply is that simple. To create a new plant, take about one inch of stem that is cut back from the crown on annual. Simply stick it into a damp, dark container filled with potting soil and rock sand and keep it in a cool space until it begins to set roots. Water the newly transplanted camellia twice daily for a few weeks. Keep it on the cool side, just like an orchid, and wait. When you see a shoot emerging, pinch it off and watch for another. Camellia plants can last for months, even years. They don't even need a long winter season in the north! Rather, place a tray underneath your camellia for an all-out watering. When watering the plant, water thoroughly, allow the roots to dry slightly and then drain away the excess water so the pot doesn't get sitting in wet soil. Be gentle around them. The longer they are, the harder it is to keep them nice and pruned as they develop. A great way to make a nice, dense plant with branches on either side is by pinching them off at the end of the trunk when they're about three or four inches in length. This technique keeps the branches closer to the center of the tree and gives a much fuller plant look.
