The short answer is yes, TunnelBear is a pretty good VPN.

I haven't seen any discussion about this, but if the company is owned by Google, this leads to a lot of potential problems.

First off: why is it owned by Google? That would require more management than they want to invest, considering that some things can fail or people leave or something else breaks the site (I have a feeling that this could happen). Second: how does Google gain anything from owning and keeping the service around? There are so many other ways they could "monetize" a service like this. Third: how do we even know that they have some sort of control over this? If they get sued in the future, what could be used to say that they are trying to take advantage of their position as an "influencer"? My first thought was, "of course the product is owned by Google". But I'm sure there are details in the fine print that might allow it to live without being controlled by the owner.

The reason I ask is the "free forever" business model of a cloud based platform just makes me raise an eyebrow.I don't trust it.it makes me think someone will start charging, then I'll remember that its not really free.

Not entirely sure, they have mentioned they use "Google Apps" before. They have mentioned that in the past. And they've mentioned more than once that they use Google Apps. Which is why I asked. If it was being administered separately, it'd be much easier to control.
