So there are certain websites that aren't supposed to be open to the public.

They are blocked by ISPs, often at the behest of authorities like the US government, and VPNs can be the only way of accessing these sites. But Netflix doesn't want people to use VPNs. So recently I decided to see how Netflix might react if I used a VPN to access their service. The answer is that it blocks Netflix using a list of IP addresses (of VPN services), so you can't access their site if you are outside the list of IP addresses they have on file. Here's what it looks like:

The way Netflix detects if you are using a VPN is through their DNS, and when you use an unlisted DNS provider it tells Netflix, as seen above. So you can either have a list of Netflix IP addresses that allow you to access the service (but they do keep records of this list), or you can trust your ISP and risk being blocked. Either way, it is a good idea to use a VPN on your desktop when you are logged in to Netflix, or you are likely to get a nasty surprise.

Now it is likely that Netflix will block all unlisted DNS (IP addresses) once they have the means to do it. But until then, it would seem to me that Netflix is taking steps to detect whether you are using a VPN, and if it sees a large number of VPN IP addresses it will block them in the next day or two (as can be seen from the log files on the bottom of the screen).

Is this why your ISP is blocking VPN? I don't think it is for blocking VPNs (and even if it was, if it's just for VPNs it wouldn't affect Netflix), but rather for other reasons. It could because it is blocking access to any IP address that is not a Netflix IP address, or for some other reason.

If the blocking is caused by an IP address change from a VPN provider, perhaps it has changed the IP address of the website that its web servers are located at (eg changing their DNS from Cloudflare to another DNS provider, or vice versa), it might try to send all traffic to the old IP address to see if the new provider will reply.

Which VPN app works for Netflix?

I am trying to find a VPN app that will allow me to watch Netflix on my iPad.

I have the app installed but it keeps crashing when I try to watch a movie. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

The only way I can watch Netflix on my iPad is by installing the application on the iPad. So you have to go to the App store and download the Netflix application and then install it on your iPad. You'll be able to watch Netflix using the Netflix app on your iPad.

You could get an Apple TV or a Roku player if you want to watch Netflix. This is the only way I know of. "They asked me what I thought of the iPhone. And I said, 'It's the first thing I think with my pants off."
I tried using Google Chrome in the Apple TV and it works fine. I just have to disable the internet security in the settings for the TV. My wife has a Roku and she can watch Netflix through that. I don't think the Roku is connected to the internet either.

The Netflix app works well for me. I've got mine on an iPad and an iPhone. The only way I've found to watch on an iPad is to use the Netflix app.

For some reason, the Netflix app never works for me on an iPad. It crashes immediately after I hit play. I don't know why. I had it installed on an iPad 3 before and it worked just fine.

There are plenty of other apps out there that you can use to stream Netflix.

Do any VPN still work with Netflix?

I've been using a free VPN service that worked great with Netflix.

After a month, the company decided to pull their VPN service, and now I can't watch Netflix in Europe anymore. Has anyone had success finding a working VPN for Netflix?

I'm not in Europe and I still have a European IP address, so it doesn't seem like that's the issue. It was a free VPN service, so I was okay with the idea that it would eventually be shut down. Which is what I was using before. Now I'm thinking I need to pay for internet AND the VPN.

I would love to find a way to get the US Netflix catalogue working with my VPN. Is that even possible? Also, if anyone knows of a free VPN service that works with Netflix, please let me know. I had the same problem a few months ago when I was in China. I couldn't watch any Netflix programs outside of the US, but I had no trouble watching TV shows and movies from the US. I was able to watch Hulu and BBC iPlayer too.

You'll need a VPN with an IP which is accessible from the US. There are several good ones you can try out.

Thanks for the responses. I've already tried those VPNs and they didn't work. I tried to set up a VPN with ExpressVPN and they said their servers don't support Netflix. I tried NordVPN and they said their servers don't support Netflix either.

ExpressVPN said they can't guarantee it will work. And that it depends on the traffic volume and network speed of the countries I'm connecting from. They said that most of their servers are in Canada and they have servers in the US, but I can't figure out how to use them. Their customer support is horrible.

I was able to get some Netflix programs to play in Germany using the free VPN service I was using. But they changed the terms of service and deleted the free service.

And no.

If you are not a fan of the Netflix app, or you don't like watching movies online, there are plenty of other things to enjoy on Netflix besides the streaming service. I recently tested using a VPN on my laptop (for reasons that will be clear in a bit), and I couldn't access the standard Netflix app as intended because it was still trying to route the Internet through my ISP (and I couldn't disable that). This made it impossible to change the language or country settings in the Netflix app. This is obviously unacceptable if you are paying for Netflix, so I decided to use a VPN to get around this problem.

This got me wondering whether it's a good idea to stream movies with a VPN, and that is when I ran into a little issue. I could stream movies through the VPN on the Netflix website, but I could not access the streaming service through the VPN on my phone. It simply would not allow me to select the option to connect through the VPN. It didn't matter which VPN I used, it was the same on each device.

So why did I experience this problem, and should I experience it in the future? I had a few guesses: The VPN probably isn't working. The movie files have to be streamed through the same ISP as the movie source. This is intentional on Netflix's part. Perhaps I could try something else. Let's take a look at each theory one by one. The VPN Doesn't Work. In theory, there are many reasons a VPN might not work. Maybe the VPN server is down, the connection between your VPN client and the server is down, you are running too many concurrent VPN clients, the connection between the VPN and the Netflix server is down, and a million other possibilities.

I tested this theory by connecting to the US Netflix site from the Netherlands, and I could not connect through the VPN. For the sake of privacy, we are going to call this VPN client A, and the connection between the VPN and the Netflix server will be called B.

I connected to a VPN server in the US. So the name of the US Netflix server is "A". And the name of the VPN client is B. I also connected to a VPN server in the Netherlands. This server has the same name as the US server, so I will call it C.
