Should I enable split tunneling?
I have a Windows 7 machine with a static IP and a dynamic DNS.
It's set up so that it can automatically update the DNS records when I change the IP. My router is a Netgear WNR1000v2. I'm using DD-WRT on it, and it's in bridged mode.
When I had the original router I had the option to enable split tunneling and it would basically set up a second tunnel to the internet. However, I didn't have to use the DNS updater (or any other internet tool) for the router, I just used a web browser and changed the IP. It worked great.
Now I'm back with my new router and I don't have the option to enable split tunneling. This time I have to use the DNS updater to update the records on the router, and I want to know if this is a problem? Do I need to enable split tunneling or not? I'd rather not have to use another internet tool to update the records on my router.
The only way to avoid using an Internet tool is to use DHCP on your router and have it assign an IP address to your device. No matter what IP address your router has, it will not respond to a packet destined to that IP address unless it is a DHCP packet.
It sounds like you are already doing this. If you are not, then you need to ask yourself why you don't want to use DHCP. There is no reason not to use DHCP.
If you have a router that does not support DHCP, you should be able to install DD-WRT and configure it to assign an IP address to your computer. If you are using Dynamic DNS, you can even use DD-WRT to generate the records that your Dynamic DNS service expects.
Does ExpressVPN do split tunneling?
ExpressVPN claims it does, but I'm not sure that it actually does.

Let's start with a simple explanation of what split tunneling is. A VPN server is basically a proxy server. It intercepts all of your internet traffic, and encrypts it. It then forwards that encrypted data to the server you've connected to. The VPN server can be hosted on the same server as your internet connection, or it can be hosted on a server somewhere else.
In some cases, your VPN server will be able to decrypt the data sent to it, and give you access to an internet connection that's encrypted. In other cases, your VPN server will only be able to re-encrypt the data.
The VPN server doesn't actually know any of the data you send to it. It just knows that the data is encrypted, and is now sending it on its way.
Split tunneling means the VPN server is only forwarding one type of data. It's not forwarding the data you send to it on its way to the server you're connected to. It's only forwarding data that's been encrypted to it.
Why is this useful? Well, if the VPN server knows what you're sending it, it can monitor all of your internet traffic. It can see what websites you're visiting, what email you're sending and receiving, and even what apps you're using.
As you can imagine, this is a big security risk. Even if your connection is encrypted, the VPN server can see everything you do.
This is the reason why you can't use a VPN if you're connected to a Wi-Fi network that's open to the internet.
Which VPN support split tunneling?
I am on Netflix and Hulu and I have a US IP.
I need to get to the UK from this IP so that I can not have the same speed of streaming.
Also if I connect directly to the US IP, why do I have to go to the US? Is it just trying to tell me to stay in the USA to not get into any trouble from the Netflix and Hulu side? Can someone please explain this to me or direct me to another thread? I am on a windows 7 32bit laptop. Sorry if this has been answered already, I couldnt find it.

That is not actually correct. When you are connected through a VPN and you open say Netflix, they see you are inside their network as well. So they won't allow you to stream. You'll only be able to stream inside the VPN.
To have the best experience you would have to have a US VPN (like OpenVPN) connect to a UK server, etc. That is because each region limits traffic coming from their side. For example, most US residents are limited to 1Mbps, while US Netflix is allowed much higher bandwidth than other users.
To have the fastest/best experience for a UK user with a US VPN, they should connect to a US server which has much faster bandwidth than a UK server. A typical VPN setup is that you have a UK server, and that connects to an US server through a VPN. The US servers are very slow, but the connection between the UK server and the US server is faster.
Also, if you want to test this, try connecting to your US Netflix from inside the VPN (in my example, I use the IP 192.168.1). Let me know if this works.
I'm not really getting you. As far as I can tell there is no difference between Netflix streaming from your local PC or streaming from another device. Why do you want to watch the US streaming of Netflix from outside the US network? The US streaming is still available from your computer, I'm not sure what you would gain watching this streaming in the UK.

A split tunnel is a process of encryption using two tunneling protocols.
Most VPN servers implement split tunneling, and when we connect to them via our internet connection, our data also travels through the server of the VPN provider. This means that if we are not very careful about our communications we can get access to other users' data. A split tunnel is used because most VPN servers must be able to handle quite a bit of traffic for the user to get the protection they need.
The good news is that split tunneling provides multiple levels of data encryption. It allows any one layer of encryption to not be cracked. For this reason it's a very effective technology, as long as everyone works together. The split tunnel technology works well if you're trying to watch something like Netflix in Canada but you aren't at a great enough data coverage area to fully use the VPN connection. Or perhaps you simply want to make sure that not any personal information or data that belongs to the user gets exposed to a bad actor or someone who has malicious intentions. That person could use your data to do anything from stealing financials to breaking into online gaming accounts. So splitting your data over two networks prevents any one piece of the data in its original network from reaching your destination.
In 2026, many free open-source VPN software (like OpenVPN) began to offer split-tunneling functionality with automatic settings and configurations. Some high-quality VPN services even allow both free and paid users to connect to them with split-tunnel. Unfortunately though, if you want split-tunneling that is compatible with PIA, you will have to pay for this feature.
There are times, though, when split-tunneling would not appear to be the most effective or appropriate technology. This is when a VPN provider is trying to secure their infrastructure at higher than just one or two layers. If you are connecting to a VPN where someone is sitting in a control room and watching everything that's going over the network, you may not want an attacker to gain access to your browsing history, for instance. You are relying on the provider to keep that control room secure. But you could still do better by encrypting your data on two separate protocols and then only connecting to the one you need.
