It's like with the .edu extension, "edu" sounds more prestigious than ".coop", ".pro" etc.

When evaluating domains, you should also take the length of domain you plan to buy into consideration. While .com domains are generally available at much lower prices than most other domains, once you get past about 10 characters you're spending more for each additional character you add. For that reason, you're always better off buying a domain with less characters if you can find a domain with those fewer characters available for sale.

As for extensions - .org have different meanings and are often used in separate contexts.
