Do camellias flower every year?

How long should camellia flowers last?

I put 4 camellia flowers in my garden every day for the past 5 months and they are still flowering.

This summer I will be growing them indoors (no sun) and watering them by hand. Are they likely to be dead by fall, or is this expected?

Hello there. My favorite type of flower to grow for cut flowers is the camellia. I love their scent, their texture, their color. This year in the spring I had a couple camellia's (can't recall exactly) in full bloom that had been well fertilized. They were blooming and still look vibrant 3 months later. So yes, they may last more than 6 months. In fact one of my favorites just started blooming again. They can come back year after year with proper care. Enjoy your flowers and thanks for the comment!

Camellia - a tough plant that flowers almost all year round if planted in the correct soil and given good light (and fertilizer). If you water them regularly and leave a certain amount of space between the plants they won't need much room to mature but if the plants get too close they will often crowd each other and produce no flowers. These two I have planted for many years, their seed pods were the ones used in production of the drug codeine which is now known as "codeine phosphate" (which is a form of morphine), which was originally created by Dr John E Kirkbride and Dr C F Woodhouse, in the U K. It was used to treat the severe pain of cancer patients during World War 1. This treatment was later introduced worldwide, mostly to aid in the medical research and care of injured soldiers.

However it was found to be addictive. It is said to be one of the most addictive drugs that we use, although there was antidote in use. As far as we know camellias didn't come into use as an illegal opiate until the 1920's. That's a good tidbit to know. I've had some amazing flowers grown in Southern California. A friend sent me some of her buds a few years ago, they were really large. Very bright yellow.

I live in Georgia and have heard of the flowers blooming up to three years.

I'd say in that case you're not talking about Camellias but rather Hyacinths or Tulips. These are bulbs, so they can flower any time from 4-6 weeks (or even longer) after planting. But there's also "bulbocides" which are chemicals used to speed the flowering process up and will only work if you plant in late March/April.

I think it is a pretty small flower too.

It's just really hard to tell if they come on every year or if you have to get lucky. Some years, we get some flowers and then nothing for about a year and a half.

So far, the 2 times I've gotten camellias were in April when our camellias are in full bloom. The rest of the time, our camellias haven't put out a bloom yet. Then when they do come, they don't come very many at a time (about 1/2 of our camellia bush).

Yes, if you take off the bottom 2 leaves, you can look through it. It doesn't take that much. Also, sometimes you see something you think is a flower, but it isn't - those are just bracts. Also, those are from my own personal experience. Every year we get flowers every year.

Yes, they're harder to find when it's not bloom time. That's what I mean. I am saying that, like me, sometimes I'll spot a flower in spring. Like last year, it was in April.

My problem is that my camellias will have many more branches than the tree in your photo has. My wife and I live in a place where the weather is never cold and never hot, because we're at about 9700 feet elevation. The weather ranges from 60-80 degrees F in the winter, and 110-140 degrees F in the summer.

We live off the grid. No electricity, no gas, no septic tank, no well, no AC/heat, no internet, no TV, etc. We have a wood stove that cooks most of our food, and a rain barrel that collects rainwater. It works for us, but not everyone will want to live that way.

It's all about location.
