Can parents use Family Link on Android?

In December 2023, the Australian Government introduced a new system to provide subsidised healthcare for children under 18. It is called Family Health Cover (Families). In order to access the services, you need to use the MyGov website or call the national call centre on 1800 020.

The MyGov website provides a Parent Portal which allows parents to apply for the Family Health Cover and pay their premiums online. However, there is no Android app available to download or access the Parent Portal from your phone.

This means that if you want to make changes to your application or premium payment, you can only do it through the MyGov website. We've written to the Department of Human Services to ask them why there's no Android app for the Parent Portal. What is Family Link? Family Link is a new way to access government services, including Medicare and Centrelink, and make payments. It replaces the Family Service Card and Child Care Benefit.

You can use Family Link on Android, iOS and the web. The Android app is available in Google Play and the App Store.

How do I use Family Link? After you register with Family Link, you will need to go to MyGov and create a personal MyGov account. This is where you will be able to see your Family Health Cover information and make payments.

To access Family Link on your phone, you need to: Go to the Family Link homepage on the MyGov website, and log in. Scroll down to 'Download the Family Link app'. Follow the instructions on the app screen. Enter your MyGov password to log into the app. Your phone will then prompt you to log into Family Link. Click 'Yes' to log in.

If you have already created a MyGov account, you will be asked to login to your account when you open the app. When you first log into the app, you will be prompted to set up a new personal identification number (PIN). What is the PIN? Your PIN is a 4-digit number you must enter to access Family Link. You can make changes to your PIN by logging into the app, going to 'My Profile' and entering a new PIN.

When you enter a PIN for the first time, you will be prompted to create a PIN that you can remember.

Can Family Link see text messages?

I've just registered on Family Link and the website says they can see your SMS texts. I didn't understand why this was needed and why Family Link was needed at all.

What does it do? What will it do? I've read through the privacy policy and haven't seen anything there. I also looked for more information about how Family Link works and this is what I found: FamilyLink is a third-party service that allows parents to register their children under the age of 14 with the government, check their children's welfare records, and even change their contact details. To sign up, you must be in Australia, have a current address, and be a legal resident or have been working in Australia for at least three months.

How does Family Link work? When you sign up for FamilyLink, you'll receive a mobile phone number to which your child will be registered. You'll also be given a unique FamilyLink ID and password that will allow you to access your child's information online.

Once you're registered, you can log into your child's account to view their welfare details, track their progress, and manage their contact details. If your child has any outstanding court commitments, you can enter the details here.

Why should I register? In many cases, when you report a child missing, the child is then placed into the National Child Offender Database (NCOD). However, if the child is also registered with FamilyLink, the information will also be sent to the Department of Human Services, and you'll be notified if the child's details are added to the NCOD.

The government has also said that some of the details that are held will not be revealed to FamilyLink, such as whether or not the child has any convictions. I'm concerned about this, I don't know how they are going to use my information, what are they going to do with it? What if someone uses my information against me? What will Family Link do with the information? If your child is registered with FamilyLink, the Department of Human Services will be able to access your child's information, including details such as their address, date of birth, and school enrolment.
