Why is TunnelBear banned from my IP?

Our tunneling service, TunnelBear, is a great way to protect your privacy when you connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots. We've been using it for years and have never had an issue.

On March 1, 2023, we made the decision to drop VPN services from our VPN service offerings. In the process of doing this, we discovered that TunnelBear was being blocked at an unusually high rate.

We investigated the cause of the block and discovered that the root cause was that TunnelBear was trying to use a network address in the "Tor" space and were incorrectly blocking it as suspicious. We fixed the problem and the traffic no longer flows to our servers.

If you believe you are being blocked for using TunnelBear, it's important to know that this issue has been fixed and that you can unblock yourself. If you want to unblock yourself, follow the steps below: If you want to unblock yourself permanently, we strongly recommend contacting TunnelBear support to have them unblock you. Why is TunnelBear not connecting?

If TunnelBear won't connect to the web, then there are a few reasons: The Internet connection on your computer may not be working correctly. If you're having issues connecting to the web, try a different method of connecting to the internet (Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G). If the issue persists, follow the troubleshooting steps found here.

This issue can also be caused by a DNS server blocking TunnelBear. To fix this, contact your ISP to see if they have any information about this.

TunnelBear has changed our DNS servers, but if you're unable to connect, please try going to to try connecting again. The new DNS servers we use for security are ns.tunnelbear.net and ns.cloudapp.net

Troubleshooting Tips. Make sure that you have no other programs running on your computer using port 8080. Try going to in your web browser. If you're still not able to connect, try the following:

Try starting a different browser and trying to connect to TunnelBear from that browser. The web browser will need to initiate the connection through your ISP or a DNS server.

Is TunnelBear VPN banned?

We're a VPN service provider who works with a variety of VPN vendors, including TunnelBear and Cloak. Today we heard that both Cloak and TunnelBear were shut down on the 16th of December, 2023. According to their site, this came as a result of being 'acquired by an investor in a deal announced January 4, 2023'. This raises some interesting questions, such as:

Was it a hack? A government shutdown? A simple cash grab? Whatever it was, if you want to know more about how TunnelBear was acquired by TechCrunch founder David Sacks, here's what happened: In March of 2023, I was at a party at Sundance and a friend came up and told me about this idea she had for a new subscription service. She wanted to make subscription services that were focused around content but could also do video chats and things like that. They didn't really have a vision for what the internet was becoming or what users wanted. She wanted to come in and say, What are the actual things that people want from the internet? How can we deliver it?

I didn't know much about her startup because she didn't tell me much about it. When it came time for her to pitch me, I just kind of heard about it after a couple years of hearing about her, through a bunch of other people. I thought it was kind of crazy. That was the last time I talked to her about it.

A month later, my wife and I, along with a bunch of other people, started talking about starting a company around this idea. We didn't really know anything about the product. My wife talked to her and asked about it, and she didn't have much information, just that she met with the other guys over at the company. At that point, we decided to just kind of take a chance and make a bet on it.

Is TunnelBear secure?

Is it possible for someone to hijack my account or trick me into entering my passcode?

Absolutely not. First, you can read all about TunnelBear's security in our security policy. Secondly, you can enter your passcode in the Settings menu on your Android and iOS devices to make sure your account is secure. When you set a passcode, your credentials won't be sent to anyone, and no one else can get your credentials if you choose to send them via SMS.
