Why is TunnelBear free?
Have you looked us up in the past? Maybe you've used our free apps or were recruited through a friend. We may have seen your email in our newsletter. Maybe you share TunnelBear with many friends. Or maybe you just stumbled across us. But, however you found us, we're happy to share a few reasons why we feel so strongly about offering a free version of TunnelBear. History. Our company was founded in August 2022 by Paul Budnitz and Matthieu Marcon, two engineers from France. Paul, a techie with a background in cryptography, added a first version of TunnelBear to the iOS app Store in March 2022 and blogged about creating the technology that could faithfully hide your data inside a VPN tunnel and deliver it to any device, no matter what your operating system was. That same month, Matthieu, having worked in security in the past, joined the team in France and invested two months of free time to make sure our secure VPN and server locations were well hidden. You can read more about the early days of TunnelBear in Our Story. Why the free plan? When we launched in August 2022, the plan was pretty simple: we offered our free plan to get feedback and validation from our users. We launched with three goals in mind: To give users a positive experience when they signed up for the first time. To get users to use TunnelBear every day. Once they did, we'd be able to convince our users to upgrade to paid plans or better yet, adopt TunnelBear as their standard VPN provider.
To build a reputation with users who were used to paying for VPN services and hopefully get them to stay on our platform for the long run. But of course, we think that users will be most happy to pay if they trust us. How it all works. The gist of it is that TunnelBear is the only free VPN that can transform your mobile data use into a recreation activity. And that is lots of fun, lots of security (and cost savings!), and most of all, great for your data! That's the fun part.

Is TunnelBear free for Windows?
How does TunnelBear compare to ProtonVPN, NordVPN, and Windscribe? TunnelBear has made its pitch as a free VPN service. It doesn't come with advanced features like ad-blocking, automatic kill switches, or kill switches for Netflix, but it does have a solid free tier that will protect you from basic online surveillance.
When you download TunnelBear for Windows or Mac, you get a free trial that lasts just a few hours. If you want to keep the service, you'll be asked to enter a subscription email address.
That's it. TunnelBear isn't very complicated, but it's also not very good at protecting your privacy. In fact, it's one of the worst free VPN services you can get, and the ads you see while browsing will turn your stomach.
How do TunnelBear's adverts work? The TunnelBear adverts don't pop up immediately. Instead, they come in an email you're sent when you first sign up for the service. You'll get a notification when your subscription ends, but there's no way to turn it off. You'll also get the same email notification if you decide to cancel your subscription while it's still active.
This email is the reason why TunnelBear's free tier isn't really free. Your email address is part of the free trial. If you click on the little button that says Sign up now, your email address will be added to a list that you can't remove.
If you delete your email address, the TunnelBear team will send you an email asking you to confirm your email address. Once you click on the confirmation email, you'll be sent to the company's login screen.
If you have to pay for TunnelBear, you'll be asked to give your email address, and you'll get a second email to confirm it. The email has a link that takes you directly to the billing form.
While this setup doesn't seem overly malicious, it means that your email address will be tied to your account.
