What is the best DNS for Linux?

If you're not using the free DNS services offered by the major DNS providers, like OpenDNS or Google, then the question becomes a lot more difficult. After all, it's difficult to choose between OpenDNS and Google, two services that are both great in different ways. When I was on the search for the best DNS, I realized that there are many great open-source options that are both good and reliable. So I wrote this list.

Let's get started! Before we go further, let's start with a short overview of DNS: What is DNS? When you type a domain name into your browser, like www.thehackernews.com, your browser sends a request to your ISP (internet service provider). The first thing that happens is a request to the authoritative name server for that domain. That server tells your browser where to find the web site associated with the domain. As the web page loads, your browser will send another request to the name server that's associated with the IP address of the web server that hosts the page.

That's all DNS does. It makes your life easier.

With OpenDNS and Google, you don't have to worry about all of that and you can get much more information from the major DNS providers. Let's go over the pros and cons of OpenDNS and Google.

What's the best way to get more info from the major DNS providers? By enabling advanced DNS logging, we can see all of the DNS queries for any given IP address. You should be able to find a lot of information if you're willing to dig.

With OpenDNS, I see lots of information. I see all of the connections to my IP address from my laptop, desktop, and mobile phone. I see the IP addresses of every remote host that's connected to me from every connection, whether it's from my laptop, desktop, and mobile phone, or from other devices (eg, Roku, Chromecast, or Amazon Fire TV Stick). I see the connection time, including the RTT and DNS resolution time. I see the total time of each connection.

This makes it pretty easy to see when my router has been down for a long period of time.

Where is DNS settings in Linux?

DNS configuration is done in /etc/resolv.conf file or with hostname -i command.

Edit /etc/resolv.conf using your favorite editor: sudo vim /etc/resolv.conf add
Nameserver 8.8 nameserver 8.4
Where you have internet access. You can edit /etc/resolv.conf and put the address of the DNS server you want to use.

Sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf It is important to read the file if you are to use the dns-resolve command. A very easy way to edit it and have it saved in a file for easy backup is to use Nethack. Sudo apt-get install nethack. Nethack -f /etc/resolv.conf After that, you just save your current resolv.conf with Ctrl-s.

I am sure there are other methods as well.
