Does a VPN slow gaming?
For all its many uses, using a VPN can be an inconvenience.
It involves the process of downloading and configuring a new app or browser extension and it must be kept running if you want to remain anonymous. It could even slow down your connection on public Wi-Fi.
But do VPNs have any actual effect on your gaming experience? And, more importantly, what kinds of games do they not work well for? How does a VPN work? So-called "virtual private network" technology was pioneered in the 1980s by Ericsson Research in Sweden, but it's not actually a type of private network. Instead, it creates a secure virtual tunnel that hides your internet traffic from anyone who's sniffing it. That can be used to protect your data or conceal your browsing habits, though most people use it to hide online activities.
The process of configuring a VPN in a major online game is exactly like the process of setting up your usual online account in the game itself. For instance, League of Legends lets you access an online server to log in, but also has a section in the settings called "connection services."
Right away, you should have a list of services that will keep your connection secure at all times. VPNs are always set to "Always," since even if you don't use one at all times, you should use it when playing League.
With that option checked, all of your games, web browsers, and other applications connecting to League's servers should automatically connect through a virtual tunnel and use encryption. Then it just takes a few seconds for your account to authenticate and log in.
Some games have dedicated settings pages for connecting through VPN, such as Destiny 2, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft. Others, such as World of Tanks, don't have a specific setting for VPN access, so it needs to be set manually each time.
I tried to set up a VPN to play Battlefield 1 through various different VPN providers, but none seemed to offer any advantage over the already good connection provided by the game's servers. What games do VPNs work for? When it comes to playing online games, a VPN makes little to no difference. You're always accessing a secure tunnel when you're logging into a server, so a VPN does not slow the connection or affect latency.
Should I trust NordVPN?
I have been using the NordVPN service since it launched in February.
The service was one of the first VPN services available for Linux users. It is still very much in the forefront of Linux VPN software. I trust it. They know what they are doing. And they have Linux clients that work.
They are offering a 5-day free trial, so you can take their service for a test drive before deciding to subscribe. I just did a bit of research on NordVPN and found that a few people from other sites are saying good things about the service. Some are complaining about it not working properly or not running well. But that's no surprise because they have competitors that do those things. So far NordVPN has proved itself as a reliable service for me.
As part of my research I asked for some feedback on the Linux client. The folks at NordVPN were very nice about it.
Why Should I Use the Linux Client? The first thing to know about NordVPN is that it only has a Linux client. If you don't use Windows you might ask, why would I need a VPN client for Linux? or I'm not trying to hide my IP address! If you do have Windows, you might ask, Why should I bother with a VPN client for Linux? or Linux is a secure operating system. Why would I want to use a service with a Linux client when there are plenty of secure Linux servers around? Here is why I use a VPN service for Linux. Protecting yourself from the dangers of the open internet. I am not the only person who uses Linux. This week we received an email from our web server. Someone used the email account to try to login to our servers and change passwords. It was a pretty big problem, as we had to clean up the mess.
These events happen all the time. They are not rare. You need to think about your online security. Your computer might be owned by someone else, so you might not own the rights to it.
You might be a target for a government to snoop into your communications. You might be at risk of becoming a victim of ransomware.
Is NordVPN good for gaming?
My experience, compared to other VPNs
What is NordVPN good for?
If you're looking for a VPN to enable gaming on the go, then NordVPN is for you. Not only is it simple to use, but it also features advanced servers and advanced security settings for gamers. When I tested it, it was a revelation.
NordVPN is great for gaming. NordVPN is probably the best VPN for gamers on the market right now, and for good reason. Let's take a look at how NordVPN works, and why I'm so confident it's for gamers.
Servers for gamers. Gaming is a demanding use-case for a VPN. Gamers need access to high-speed, secure networks to play without delays, packet loss or dropped packets.
NordVPN's servers are designed to give you the performance you'd expect in gaming situations - they're very fast, and the network is more reliable than most gaming VPN services. The servers provide great speeds even when you're using them on the go.
Security matters too. NordVPN includes some of the best security for gamers available right now. Advanced security features like AES 256-bit encryption and DNS leak protection make your browsing safe while you game. NordVPN doesn't leave anything to chance, ensuring your connection is as secure as possible when you're away from the house.
How does it compare to others? NordVPN has been growing in popularity with gamers over the past few years. In particular, it's done extremely well since its debut as an Apple exclusive app back in 2023, allowing it to rise above the crowd. Since then, it's been a fixture on the Xbox One, and Apple, Mac and Windows platforms.
As for other VPNs for gamers, it certainly has its ups and downs. But if you're looking for an easy to use VPN that can get you playing games online with a great network experience, then NordVPN might be exactly what you need. Let's see what makes it a gaming favourite and why you should choose it.
NordVPN vs. Other VPNs In my experience, NordVPN makes the most sense for gamers. But does it make the most sense?
