How does Hulu know I'm using a VPN?

Why is Hulu saying I'm not in the US?

I have a paid Hulu account, yet they say I am not in the US.

Is this because of my international credit card, or is there something else going on? It appears to be an issue with their billing.

Yes, I just checked and my account says I'm in Sweden but it looks like the billing is in the US. Is it possible to change this? It would be nice to change the country before I travel. I'd love to be able to set up a new account while on vacation in San Francisco.

A US address will be provided for payment processing when you choose that option at time of purchase. Please note, the address is the billing address from your credit card - the address associated with your Hulu access is different.

If you would like to pay from a different country, you can add an address for billing from your local address book at time of purchase, and a separate address for any billing needs while traveling. In the near future we will enable the option to pay for access using the information from your local debit or credit card payment provider instead of your billing address.

So I'm thinking that Hulu has the correct info, so that's just for reference purposes. I'm more curious about how that US billing info got into my account. I don't use a US billing address.

Also I'm having a ton of trouble logging into some of my other accounts via my email, since I have a lot of them and no one knows how to get that straightened out. It's always "Invalid key".

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I will contact my service provider and I'm also working on changing my default address (that's probably part of the problem as well).

This may be silly but I just realized that Hulu might need a phone number to verify my account. If that is true, what type of phone number should I pick? Is a local number valid? I was asked to enter a cell phone number (toll free, etc.) as part of the activation of my new account. You should enter the information requested at the time of purchase, as I explained above. The billing address on your account is irrelevant in this regard.

That's fine, but I just received an email from Google stating that they were unable to login, and I had to reset my password for it.

How does Hulu know I'm using a VPN?

I found a website using Tor.

It doesn't have any IP and thus it's not clear to me that they know.

How can I ensure that they don't? Is there a way to prevent any site from knowing what ISP you are connected with? There are several different ways of doing this. There are many steps in any of these methods, but in each case there is some technical process you must first undertake.

Tor is pretty clear that when you are behind a Tor exit node your traffic will be anonymized and protected as part of the protocol. All your traffic needs to be encrypted however, and you need an exit node within reach of the internet. There are a lot of exit nodes in the public network and you have to trust that these exit nodes are doing their job. The Tor site claims that "anonymity is achieved by ensuring that there is no permanent link between the identities of the exits and its users", but there has been at least one report of people being personally identified by exit nodes.

VPNs are somewhat easier to deal with than Tor for a number of reasons. Firstly, VPN services generally offer authentication which is more foolproof than Tor, secondly they put a server within range and encrypt the traffic you send through it. They have to put this somewhere though - the location of that server may be known to others. Finally, they are subject to exactly the same problems as all other ISPs, eg your traffic isn't anonymous, but you are much safer as an individual. You still need an exit node on the public internet, but this isn't as critical.

VPN providers tend to list exactly who they are under government scrutiny. We may never be entirely sure exactly which country they are located in. At the least this is good to know if that country or state tries to block access to the VPN. However, a better way to check if a VPN is safe is to make sure the country of your ISP is different to the country where you think the VPN is located. If they are in the same country as you then you have a problem as they'll be using exactly the same laws to track your traffic.

Some VPN providers allow you to run the VPN directly on your own hardware. If this is the case then it will not have any sort of VPN client app on the phone which would give away your location or even reveal that your connection was a VPN.
