Unlike all other bulbs, each hyacinth bud has three green, leathery leaves. The leaves come from the top of the bulb and cover its base for most of its life. What are camellias associated with?

Some say they help one to develop a true spiritual consciousness; others think that camellias are beautiful, or, indeed, "poetic" (if you buy that word). No one knows for sure why anyone likes camellias, or who started "growing" them, because people seem to keep them all over the world on a wide variety of sites! What do we know for sure? In my opinion, three things are for sure. First, most of us all would agree that camellias belong to the family known as the Rosaceae, and as such have to be in the same botanical kingdom as apples, apricots, peaches, pears, and plums. They are also close to cherries and plums, but the leaves are not as divided and lobed as those of our best-known fruit trees.

Second, most of us would agree that the flower is quite attractive, if not pretty. It's even been considered beautiful in many places around the world. It is a tubular flower, usually bluish-white or pink, but there are many color variations, including blue, purple, and rose red. In addition to being colored, some flowers also have a waxy or powdery coating on the surface. This is called "powdery-caste." When this occurs the pollen of the male part of the plant may or may not work its way into the flower, depending upon atmospheric conditions and what types of pollinators are flying about in this particular moment. The camellia seems to have an affinity for bees.

Third, most of us would agree that the best time to grow or buy camellias, especially if you live in a warm or tropical climate, is between March and April. However, if you live in a place with cooler temperatures, such as our Midwest home, you will probably wait until May for your earliest blossoms. Of course, you should make sure the soil is fairly evenly moist at the time you plant your camellias.

Where did the camellia name come from? It comes from the Latin name Camellus, which means "small shell" or "shell." In ancient times, shells were used as containers, so there was little to say that the plant might be called camellus.

What does the color camellia flower mean?

By Karen.

(Beverly Hills, CA). What does the color Camellia mean? What does it mean if a person is in love with me and I have not seen that flower? Does it mean something good for me? Thanks for any help. Answer: According to my research, "Camellia" means something good. According to a book called "The Flowers: Their Symbolism, History and Poetry" by Florence B. Fenno and Mary Ann Fenno, "the flowers are called 'Camellias' after a young maiden who was so fair that she took her name from them, a name which means (in the Greek) 'brightness.'"
