How much selenium should you take for hypothyroidism?
Question.
I've recently been told that I have Hypothyroidism (T.T). I've also been told that a doctor told me to take 500mcg selenium per day. Is this enough or should I take more? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
Expert Answer. Selenium is a common component of iodinated compounds found in iodine-rich food, like seafood, eggs, meat and milk., or hypothyroidism, is caused by a thyroid gland that produces less than enough thyroid hormone. Selenium plays an important role in the thyroid gland. Therefore, it is not surprising that your doctor suggested you consume 500 mcg of selenium per day. However, your doctor may have based his suggestion on a study in rats conducted by University of California, Davis, researchers. These researchers determined that levels of selenium in the blood were improved when hypothyroidism was corrected by administering selenium-containing yeast, a source of selenium. The researchers hypothesized that selenium may have this effect because the thyroid gland synthesizes a protein, tyrosine peroxidase (TPO), which can be converted into active form of selenium, which the rat body can use. In some people with T. Not all selenium-containing compounds are metabolized into active forms. This happens because of a defect in the thyroid gland that synthesizes selenoproteins, such as TPO, or because the level of TPO is not high enough in the first place. The researchers concluded that, these findings suggest that selenium deficiency, even in very low concentrations, impairs the ability of the thyroid gland to produce active form of selenium, which normally increases the bioavailability of selenium from selenoproteins.
I do have thyroid cancer, stage 3c. Do you think that there is anything else that my doctor should check or look into? I have gone to many doctors and specialists over the last 6 months. And they all say different things. My last one just has me on Levothyroxin 150mcg. I am really upset right now. I will try to figure out what everyone says next. Thanks!

What form of selenium is best for thyroid?
My friend got the wrong kind and it has caused her thyroid to swell to the size of a golf ball and she is having difficulty eating and sleeping at the moment.
What kind would best for her and will she make it better. She didn't have enough time to see her endocrinologist as her health insurance was canceled and she had no way to pay for a visit. She called him from the hospital after they released her, she was very nervous and I'm worried about her. The doctor wouldn't tell her anything and she hasn't been in a position to call him back.
Thank you so much for your help. A thyroid problem is a serious matter and not something you should mess around with. I'm so glad your friend has seen the right doctor. If her swelling is the result of an autoimmune disease and she gets a positive antibody test, then she needs to see an Endocrinologist as soon as possible because he can perform a fine needle biopsy to get a look at her lymph node tissue (aka, it's tissue from the immune system, where antibodies are found), and a thyroid biopsy to diagnose the exact cause of her symptoms. These tests have helped us know what kind of meds to give when a patient presents like this, and they would have helped your friend in her last phone call with her doctor. He could have taken out the swollen gland, biopsied it, and then biopsied her lymph node tissue.
As for treatment, I'm not sure. Usually, the doctor does blood tests to see what kind of medication is needed, however your friend has gotten into such a situation that it makes my job a little bit more difficult. I would suggest getting her referred to an Endocrinologist who can perform a fine needle biopsy to diagnose the exact cause of the swelling.
Thank you again for your help. This post is really helping me a lot to understand that I can do a fine needle biopsy on my endo with no risk or complications but now I just don't have the time and I just got done doing surgery last night so I'm kind of drained. If I don't do it will it all go away on its own? I am so grateful for this. Your friend could be suffering from Hashimoto's Disease.
Should you take selenium if you have hypothyroidism?
I have a thyroid problem.
I was wondering if anyone knows about taking selenium with it, whether it might help or make things worse? I am taking the regular dosage of synthroid and still having trouble losing weight. Could you give any suggestions on that? Thanks.

Selenium is important to your health and I think the reason for your weight gain is lack of iodine in your diet. Iodine has been shown to regulate thyroid function. Selenium may be helpful as well but you may have to use a very low dosage. You need at least 200 mcg/day. I do not use the gel drops because I like the taste of the pill. Good luck.
Selenium supplements are only helpful in combination with iodine supplements. In hypothyroidism, the main culprit is the decreased production of T3, not T4. Thus, T3 supplementation has no effect. In fact, an increase of T4 levels could actually be detrimental as an increased T4/T3 ratio is associated with worse outcomes in hypothyroidism.
What makes this so confusing is the fact that selenium supplementation has been shown to improve thyroid function in some studies, and worsen it in others. You will need to talk with your doctor about using selenium, and the dosage will be very important.
My thoughts on eating iodine rich foods.
Selenium is a trace element that is essential for the human body. It is important for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, the proper functioning of the immune system and the proper functioning of the reproduction organs. You need to have a good amount of iodine as well. I believe that the best way to eat iodine rich foods is raw foods, especially vegetables such as green and yellow vegetables.
