Why does Hulu block VPNs?

Computerworld reports that Hulu attempts to block a VPN called VPNify in Apple products. However, our tests show it does not, and in fact offers a best-practice approach to protecting your privacy. Read on to find out what Hulu is doing, and what you can do about it.

Hulu's new "adult" content on iOS and Android devices was an unexpected surprise, particularly after the company began to explicitly market the TV subscription service as one that doesn't have "adult" content, including nudity and "mature themes." If the Apple TV and Roku have an app for HuluPlus, then it's also available as a standalone app on iOS and Android, and enables access to any of their media. The program's description reads: "Hulu enriches your television experience with a wide range of premium content from across the globe. Not all titles are available in all countries."

However, there's a big catch to HuluPlus: in order to use it, you need to install a HuluPlus "over-the-air" (OTA) app on your TV or device, which logs your subscription. And since Apple TV, iPhone, or iPad owners have no control over the hardware, they must install the OTA apps if they want to use HuluPlus.

(A number of PC magazine and journal sites reported on Wednesday that Hulu has added HuluPlus to Apple devices. That's not true - the Hulu app has always existed, but only enabled access to Hulu's protected Hulu Plus content. It's now locked down, but if you had Hulu Plus, you can access that content on any device.)

The Hulu app description on the Apple TV and Roku isn't much better, stating that HuluPlus will void your cable and satellite contracts, although it doesn't mention HuluPlus's OTA functionality. Of course, that's not what people will find on Apple devices, and it doesn't make any sense. HuluPlus doesn't stop anyone from watching Hulu content on a Roku or Apple TV, but they would also need to visit Hulu's website, not won a one-time code from Roku or AppleTV, and factor that into the equation.

In other words, Hulu's not blocking users from accessing Hulu's content from anywhere, they're just giving Apple users a install binary that will enable them to access Hulu Plus without having tried to "bleep" their cable or satellite provider.

I've been looking around and haven't found any sort official policy on the matter. If they do, I'm not aware of it. If they don't, what can you do to get around the limitations?

There's a lot of confusion on this and a lot of wrong information. Unfortunately, it's hard to find anything reliable. I will make an effort to answer most of your questions, though.

The short answer is: Yes. It does.

Hulu can't monitor your traffic. You are free to choose any VPN you like. You can even use Tor. You can even use a proxy.

If you're not going through a VPN, it's just some people that keep blocking your IP address. The answer was easy. At least I thought so.

For a long time I have been having trouble accessing Hulu and many other streaming websites using the Tor browser. I tried installing a VPN and even tried using a proxy. Nothing worked.
