How do I extract data from a YouTube video?

I'm making an application that extracts data from a YouTube video.

For example, I'd like to extract the title, description, and duration of the video. How do I go about this? I've looked at the YouTube Data API, but it appears that I have to include a YouTube username and password in order to make a request. Is there a way around this? I don't want to ask for permission from YouTube's servers, I just want to read information from the video they uploaded.

You can create a simple Python script that creates a Gdata.Client() object and sends requests to the YouTube Data API using gdata.youtube.service.YouTubeService(). The service object takes a YouTube user id as its first argument.
