Why is my Mac not letting me access websites?
What's the problem?
So you've got a shiny new Mac and you're happy to use it, until you can't get any websites. And you know that's a sign of trouble.
But what is it exactly that's causing the problem? You can't see anything when you're logged in as you? And just what are you expected to do to fix it? If you have a Mac, here's a quick guide to making sure you can surf the Web once again! How can I access my Mac's Safari? Start your Mac. Open Safari and you'll see your login page at . To log in, tap the log in button and enter the email address and password you gave Apple when you set up your Mac. The whole thing should be so quick that you'll wonder how you could have been missing it!
Why can't I see anything on the screen? The first thing to look at is the display settings in the System Preferences > Display app. You want your Mac's display to have something called "retina display", which lets it display more detail and colours. There should be a checkbox for "Retina display". It could also have a dropdown menu for resolution or aspect ratio - pick a setting that works best on your screen.
And don't forget to check the "Displays have separate Spaces" setting too. This will allow you to keep a separate desktop for every display - meaning you won't have to move through windows between displays like you would have to on a PC.
Where did my Safari web browser window go? Macs usually have only one browser window open at any time. But sometimes it's good to keep a few open - in case you want to quickly grab an email or two, perhaps, or open a tab with a different site.
You might notice a second browser tab or window up the top bar of the screen. That's your Safari window, and it's the one you'll be using for the rest of this article. But don't worry, it's perfectly fine to have lots of tabs open at once, and it's often a great way to use multiple windows.
For example, you can have a quick tab to check for news, or one to read the latest book reviews.
How do I stop Safari from blocking sites?
I've turned on an automatic search engine and now Safari seems to be blocking all the sites I visit.
Is there a way to stop it? You can set your settings to "Ask First", then when you first visit a website, it will prompt you if you want to allow it or not. Settings > Safari > Ask First. This is a temporary fix for this issue. I've tried to find a better solution, but Apple has not yet fixed this problem. You may have to wait until they do.
Try to change the setting in your Safari Preferences. You can find it by going to Preferences > Search Engine > Ask before allowing a site to be visited.
How do I stop my MacBook from blocking websites?
Every day, I get emails from people complaining that their MacBook Pro or MacBook Air or iMac is blocking websites.
Often, they're from people who've got some new piece of software installed and have been told to update their version of it. Usually, they've been told to 'uninstall the thing you've just installed'. Usually, the site that's been blocked is a site they use to send money or access something online, like a bank account.
I've got a couple of questions for them. Is there a reason you're using this version of this software, and why do you want to uninstall it? Did you know you were installing a virus or other malware when you installed this software? If so, you can ask the maker of the software for help removing it. Most popular programs are sold by well-known companies. You can also see if there's an online forum or chat room for people who've had the same problem.
If the software is from a large corporation, such as Microsoft or Adobe, and you're experiencing problems, there's a good chance the company will be able to help you, because it won't want people to install malware. (You'd think a company would want people to use their products, right?) If you're not sure whether the software is safe, the safest thing to do is to install it on a temporary folder instead of your hard drive. Then, when you're done, shut down and delete the folder. You can find instructions on how to do this in the Help/About folder of your Mac.
If you don't know what to do with the folder you've created, you can always delete it after you've done what you need to do. Are you sure the website you're having problems with is really blocked, and not just being slow? If you're running a desktop Mac or a Mac laptop, you'll probably see your browser's status bar at the bottom of your screen telling you whether the site you're trying to visit is currently being blocked. You may see messages from your browser saying it has crashed and failed to load, or that it has been frozen or stopped responding.
